1316266 2012-12-04 05:55:00 I wouldn't have thought anyone who was so hopeless as not to get a job in NZ would ever find one in Australia. prefect (6291)
1316267 2012-12-04 11:21:00 Its standard practise to blame the government for everything which is a natural consequence of building a social democracy. That doesn't mean we shouldn't pause and ask keen questions: what exactly can we say to a New Zealander who steals a grant of money from the taxpayer and then flees to Australia?? If the same person did that with his wifes share of the matrimonial home we'd all be appalled. And Jacinta Ardern wouldn't be crying about it in Parliament. This has happened and does happen.

But no - because the taxpayer is the one being ripped off, suddenly the Minister of Social Welfare is at fault.

In essence the person who takes that money to flee overseas is in the wrong. Perfectly understandable of course, but wrong nevertheless. Any pollies or journalists considered that?

^^ this. If they have a job in oz you're not paying them welfare. Isn't that what all you bluenoses are after ? Reducing the cost of social welfare ? I'm pretty sure the cost of a flight is covered pretty quickly by the unemployment benefit, within a few weeks I'd have thought.

As pctek said, sometimes people just can't win

Winston, the problem is the "Buck" has to stop somewhere . I think it was President Reagan that had a sign on his office door which read “The Buck Stops Here” .

In this case the “Buck” stops with the Government because Work and Income is a Government Agency . Having said that, it’s a bit harsh to blame Paula Bennett or John Key personally, prior to the facts of the matter being released .

The type of work these travellers hoped to find in Aus will be of interest . Maybe they were potential Hookers and Gigolos . ;)

Why not blame Paula Bennet the social welfare department has made some amazing blunders under her stewardship, in the words of Prefect she should be shot

1316271 2012-12-04 20:33:00 From what I gather beneficiaries can get a transition to work grant of $1500 to cover job search costs like buying suitable clothing and travel for interviews, etc. Paula Bennett was asked in Parliament to produce exact numbers of beneficiaries who used the grant to travel to Australia to find work. Paula said that she had not had time in the last three hours to go back and manually check files from over the last five years. She is the Minister in charge of Social Development. Why can she not delegate WINZ employees to give her this information, surely she would not personally check files.

This is what the Transition to Work grant (www.workandincome.govt.nz) is all about.

Maximum $300.00 for essential Job Search Costs, a Maximum of $500.00 Bridging Finance which bridges the gap between Benefit stopping and their first pay from Employment and the rest on Job Placement costs. $1500.00 is the max TTW that can be paid in a 52 Week Period - however this is for ESSENTIAL costs to search for/starting Employment.

1316273 2012-12-04 22:25:00 When Key made an election promise of 170,000 more jobs he just neglected to tell us they were in Australia. B.M. (505)
