1315980 2012-12-03 07:55:00 Yes Mike there’s been quite a few lately.

My first suspect is Zara, fiddling, whoops trying to edit, :D and loosing them.

Maybe it’s deliberate, maybe it isn’t, who knows, who cares?

One thing I do know is this forum has gone backwards since Bruce & Rob left.

1315981 2012-12-03 08:11:00 Naah. I been in queenstown for five days on leave. Only thing I deleted is a spammer.

Hmmmm, well I hade a Joke removed that was part of Billy’s “Monday Laughs” last week that was not offensive in any way.

And I was going to respond to one of Prefects Posts that was a link to two of Fairfax’s reports but it was wiped also.

Me think the "Squeaky Wheels" are getting "Too Much Grease". ;)

1315983 2012-12-03 08:25:00 Good news!

I followed Zqwerty's suggestion and yes it is a model with the fridge at the top and a freezer at the bottom.

The fridge was actually quite warm with my chocolate actually starting to melt! but the freezer was still cold.

So I turned it off for fifteen minutes.
Then back on again and after a while checked it and now the fridge seems to be cooling down again.

I'll report again in the morning.

1315984 2012-12-03 10:20:00 Yes it will work ok for a day or two until it ices up again, if you have the expertise you can measure the heater and see if it is still a resistor and not open circuit, make sure the timer is operational, measure the defrost thermostat when the evaporator is frozen and ascertain that the thermostat is a low value of ohms.

Note this is not the thermostat that you can adjust to vary the temperature at which the compressor is switched off. It controls the freezer temperature but actually measures the fridge temperature that is why the element ices up because the fridge cannot get cold and switch off the variable thermostat.

The thermostat stud I am talking about is a two wire device thermally connected/touching the evaporator and monitoring it's temperature and is in series with the heater element.

Don't forget to check that the fan is running, it is essential to the operation of this type of fridge, it runs continuously.

Normally you would have to switch it off for quite a few hours as they get quite an ice build up when not working correctly.

Another indication is a lot of frost in the freezer which should not be there.

One of the above will not be so and the associated faulty part will need to be replaced.

Do not attempt this unless you are used to working on mains voltages. Danger Will Robinson.

Its still going OK as at this morning.

But I did think it was too good to be true, that with such a major problem (putting out heat) that just turning it off for 10 minutes would fix it.

Thanks for your further suggestions.

I will have another look at the fan, compressor etc, but there is no way I would attempt anything myself.

I suppose it comes down to finding a technician to fix it at a reasonable cost, as I am on my own and hardly need much refrigeration space, it is an upright slim one.
So I could be better off to buy a small new fridge.

Escpecially if a thermostat costs $55.00.

And in light of what happened with my daughter with her 4 year old F&P washign machine a techician came out twice to fix it and charged her over $300 to replace two small parts. He should have given her the option of buying a new one!

I will report later.
