156720 2003-07-01 10:35:00 I would like to restore the thumbnails views I once had for .jpg files when the My Pictures folder was opened in 98SE.

It was intact until I installed a program called CC Viewer. Upon install it asked to have various file extensions associated with it, which I ticked the box for.

Then I uninstalled CC Viewer because it didn't give a full screen view like Internet Explorer did. (The app. previously associated with .jpg's.)

I created a new association for .jpg to IE, and this works if I double click on a .jpg file. But the lack of thumbnails doesn't seem to be with associations as .bmp files produce a thumbnail although I haven't yet created a replacement association for those. Also, if I change a .jpg extension to .jpe or .jpeg, the thumbnail for that file is displayed.

156721 2003-07-01 13:39:00 Do you want the files to be viewed as thumbnails in the folder or a thumbnail preview in the side bar?

For the first, in Windows Explorer go to View menu and check the Thumbnails item listed for the second go to View > Folder Options and check Active/Web Content or something similar, I'm going by memory here as I'm in front of a 2K machine at the mo. If Folder Options (or Options) is not under the View menu it will be in Tools.

156722 2003-07-04 12:02:00 Thanks for your input Murray. I was looking to restore the thumbnail views of the jpg files which previously were displayed when the My Pictures folder was opened. Since uninstall CC Viewer, the thumbnail of jpg files is displayed as a white square with an icon in the center. Whereas bmp files display as thumbnails OK. Also, if I rename a file's jpg extension as jpe or jpeg, the thumbnail displays OK too. So it is not just a case of ticking the properties box of a folder to enable thumbnails, or selecting thumbnails from the view icon at the top of Windows Explorer page.

I didn't particularly want to rename the extension of hundreds of jpg files, plus do the same whenever I saved one, so as to be able to view the thumbnail. Hope this explains better what the situation is. Any ideas?

156723 2003-07-06 11:31:00 Hi Murray. I have done what I should have done to start with - checked back through the F1 archives to see if there was anything apropriate to my problem. There was. Problem now fixed by going into Add/Remove Programs, choosing Internet Explorer, choosing repair.

It must be fairly time consuming for you guys to look after our problems and I feel a little remorseful that I have wasted some of your time on a question that had previously been answered several times. Might I suggest including a note on the F1 page suggesting a search of the archives for the problem being experienced before posting that problem?

156724 2003-07-06 23:37:00 No prob, not wasted. Glad you sorted it. If you ever want to batch rename images files get Irfanview (http://www.irfanview.com/), its free, don't associate files if you don't want. Great program.
