156686 2003-07-01 09:16:00 I have recently purchased a DSE Terminator running Linux Mandrake 9.
I have no problem installing software from the Mandrake disks which came with the machine. However I in spite of searching through the numerous help files I cannot find how to install software from a floppy or another CD Rom. Can somebody please save me the hassle of searching more help files especially when I am not yet familiar with a lot of the Linux terminology.

156687 2003-07-01 09:35:00 What software are you trying to install?

Windows software will not work in linux. Mandrake uses a format called RPM to package programmes. RPM packages have the extension .rpm in the filename.

To install an RPM package, all you should have to do it locate the .rpm file on the floppy/CD and double click it. You will be prompted for the root/administrator password . Then comfirm that you want to install the file.

156688 2003-07-01 10:00:00 Thank you for your reply. The software I am trying to install is a solitaire package I downloaded from the Linux site on a Windows machine and saved to a floppy. Otepopo (4134)
156689 2003-07-01 10:22:00 Did you get it to go? Rpm's are great but not all packages are that easy.
If its a tar.gz it can be a little harder, if it is tell me the file name or site to get it from and ill show you how to install it

156690 2003-07-01 12:25:00 There is a lot of software on the mandrake CDs too.

There is a rather good solitare game called patience (under amusments->cards->patience). It has freecell etc modes too.

It is part of the kdegames package if you don't have it installed.

156691 2003-07-02 09:50:00 Thank you for that info. I have now installed the games package from the Mandrake disk and am enjoying Freecell & Mahjohn. Otepopo (4134)
156692 2003-07-02 09:54:00 Thank you for your reply. I have now installed the games from the Mandrake disk but am still interested in the ones I have on a floppy especially as I would like to install a genealogy program from the same site. The site was www.linux.org. Otepopo (4134)
156693 2003-07-03 08:52:00 Your gonna have to get a bit more specific if u want some help.
What are the filenames on the disk xxx.tar.gz etc
What are the program names and specific links to them

PS
suggestion, learn to use the terminal. This is invaluable in linux not everything can be done through a flashy gui. Next time your at the bookshop get a beginners guide to linux, or search google "beginner guide linux" and read away.

156694 2003-07-03 11:07:00 Glad to hear it. Frozen bubble and klickety (both on the mandrake cds) are my current addictions.

As rsnic said, we will need to know a bit more about the other stuff you downloaded. You will be best to stick to packages made specifically for mandrake.
