2003-07-01 02:55:00 | that sounds really funny am i sick? LOL any way i heard back from pc co and they suggest two options: ( they gave me detailed instructions but most of the reasoning behind it is gobbledee gook to me) chaintech motherboard CMOS or ASUS motherboard CMOS what do they mean ? why should i change both or one bios thing ? or is this in effect a format? talks about putting recovery disk in and such altering details and then reboot (automatically ?) one part of it just talks about altering from floppy boot to cd rom boot. which i understand but why the difference? how will this fix my machine? telling it new settings makes it forget the problems it had in the old? or something like that? and another question with these two options will that wipe the slate and it all be fresh and all past info lost? or what? am struglling with these ideas and questions at moment, but hope with time and reading ill understand it soon can any one spread some further light on this for a my better understanding. beetle

2003-07-01 04:06:00 | ps. what does flashing the bios mean ? when i think of flashing i think of a flashlight on / off or a indecent exposure of bodily parts flashing at you from an open jacket . LOL is you get my meaning. i know this is not helpful but cant be helped when i dont know what it means or how it works. sorry to offend anybody reading this post, not done on purpose. beetle

2003-07-01 04:43:00 | If you're just wanting to format your PC, then I see no valid reason to be flashing your BIOS! Flashing your Bios can add aditional functionality to certain parts of your PC, such as allowing larger HDD's (Mainly a problem on older PC's) to be installed. If you're just doing a format/reinstall of Windows, then there should be no reason at all for you to be flashing your BIOS :-)

2003-07-01 04:48:00 | Im not sure where the term "flashing" comes from, because its in effect a new word for the same thing. Flashing the BIOS is the equivalent of reformatting and reinstalling an OS. The same caveats apply, you WILL lose all BIOS settings, so you need to make sure you either understand everything, or you write down what everything is set to as they all revert to default after flashing it. Flashing the BIOS involves downloading the latest BIOS version for your particular motherboard (Go to the manufacturers website, and look for the BIOS update for your particular Model), installing the update - the download SHOULD come with reasonably detailed instructions, and then resetting the BIOS - either by a jumper setting or if the motherboard is reasonably old, then by removing the Backup battery for (2 min?). No doubt there are a fair few people on this board who could help you here, but my advice would be to find someone who can actually come to your house, sit down and show you exactly what needs doing. There is very little point in your simply following instructions that you dont understand as you wont learn anything, and if (heaven forbid) something DOES go wrong, having help only an email away does you no good if you cant access the internet... | 156576 | 2003-07-01 04:50:00 | I do not believe they are telling anyone to flash the BIOS . Please, everyone, read the posts carefully . :) It sounds to me that they are simply giving instructions on how to make the PC boot from CD, and there are 2 possibilities depending which BIOS (and motherboard) was installed . And yes beetle, you will under normal circumstances, end up with a "renewed" computer where everything on it has been reloaded afresh . All your data and settings will be gone . Just like the PC was when it was brand new and just delivered . If the problems were due to faulty software (windows) then all should be well .

2003-07-01 05:53:00 | Wait, WAIT, WAIT!!! :O NO! The instructions are NOT to flash the BIOS at all . No offence to you Beetle, but the instructions they have given you are simply to give the hard drive a Check Disk run (specifically chkdsk /r/f ) . I can see where they have confused you by including directions on how to make your computer boot from the CD recovery disc which is where all the CMOS settings, etc are mentioned . Rest assured that it is all quite simple and there is no BIOS flashing, nor formatting or anything like that involved . :-) I'll have to try and talk to you later, OK? In the meantime, can you print out that document they sent you? You will need to have it handy to follow the instructions .

2003-07-01 05:57:00 | Well you only have one BIOS. Either you have an ASUS motherboard or a Chaintech motherboard. Some motherboards do in fact have a dual BIOS. If you want to just reformat the hard disk and it was working before then I see NO reason to flash the BIOS. I would suggest that you get someone you trust to give you some advice.
