156485 2003-06-30 21:32:00 I updated my pentium III, win2000 computer with service patch 4 as recently released. Now the computer desktop opens normally but my programs will not now open eg Internet Explorer, Word etc. I can select Settings/control panel but the panel will not open. However when I shut down the panel and other programs seem to be behind the desktop and a message stating that the programs are saving data and shutting down is displayed. I cannot see the programs in task manager. A similar problem occurred when installing sp3 and I cured it eventually by reformatting my Win2000 partition and reinstalling Win2000 and all my programs and data.
I do not wish to go through this again. Does anyone have any suggestions?

156486 2003-07-01 10:32:00 Assuming that the probs arose after you installed SP4 (with AV on??) and its got nothing to do with the change in the processor what I would suggest is that you boot your computer in safe mode(the second choice after pressing F8 during the startup) and simply uninstall SP4 (which in my opinion is not worth much anyway). Hope that helps in the unlikely case that you haven't solved the prob yet :) devashish (4131)
156487 2003-07-01 10:36:00 There was no change of processor after all..........and contrary to my previous belief its a very recent post so I'm sure that it will help, incase you will continue with installing sp4 again I would advise you to stopp all the applications that are running on ur comp devashish (4131)
156488 2003-07-01 13:26:00 Another option maybe to boot to your win2k cd and choose repair from the options there. Might save you a reinstall.

Have you checked the MS site for any issues?
