156506 2003-06-30 11:10:00 Hi,
I am having problems reading and writing compressed files on cds. I have two drives, a 48x ASUS and samsung dvd drive, and both wont read, or files get crc errors. Things like .cab files on game cds dont work. The only thing that I can think of that might cause this is the 5VSB voltage runs between 3.99 and 4.1 volts, could this be the problem, as I have 2 case fans, 2 cd drives and a volcano 9 cpu cooler.
Any hep on this would be great.
Thanks

156507 2003-06-30 11:20:00 eek!

Suprised it works at all at that voltage. How are you measuring it?
If thats correct it will have a lot of high frequency ripple on it as well.

Disconnect some case fans and see if that helps, it really needs the full regulated 5 volts

156508 2003-06-30 11:23:00 You mention all but your power supply wattage which can be very critical but if they all boot up at the same time that is not the problem because the lack of a power supply usually shows it's self on boot up mikebartnz (21)
156509 2003-06-30 11:30:00 ok,
the voltage is from the Soltek temperature measuring software that came with my motherboard. Whats high frequency ripple?
Also would getting a better PSU help, I'll look up the wattage of my curent one.

Thanks.
P.S I really want to fix this as I cant read the package files to install Linux!
(and its not the cds)

Thanks for the replys!

156511 2003-06-30 11:42:00 If that 12v rail only supplies those devices it would not necessarily stop a boot-up, but I seriously doubt that its really that low.

Measure it with a meter, as the motherboard sensors are very approximate. Worth checking on though.

156512 2003-06-30 11:50:00 Its the 5 volt rail thats running low, all of the other ones are fine. cold_fu5ion (3438)
156513 2003-06-30 12:04:00 Sorry, didn't read it as well as I should have.
Not all CD drives actually use the 5 v rail, they often depend on the 12 v. rail only

If it was one of the main 5 v rails, then the PC would not boot or run at all.
I suspect your motherboard sensors are wildly inaccurate, but you really should check it with a meter in case it is only used by the drives.

Any spare power connectors that you could swap over inside?

156514 2003-06-30 12:05:00 The case fans should use 12v rails, so not likely to be a problem. godfather (25)
156515 2003-06-30 20:45:00 Hi,
There arent any other leads to swap it around with, but I'll check it with a meter.
