156443 2003-06-30 10:26:00 I have a problem.
I built this computer myself just under two years ago EVERYTHING was working fine until I reformatted the harddrive recently.
Now everything works except the onboard sound.
I have tried fiddling with bios options and reinstalling defaults etc. I have tried to install all of the latest drivers and everything. There are no conflict in hardware properties. The multimedia tab in control panel (I run Win 98 SE) when opened all the options under the Audio and Midi tabs are unchangeable, so no sound icon in the botton of the screen. It will not run under any condition no sound whatso ever. Error messages in Win Mplayer - No audio hardware available, or the hardware is not responding.

System:
O/S - Win 98 SE
Processor - Athlon XP 1700+
RAM - 384 Mb SD-RAM
MB - Soltek SL - 75KAV/-X
Sound - Onboard "SoundBlaster Pro Hardware with Direct Sound Ready AC97 Digital Audio Controller with Codec onboard"

Any help or advice you have would be greatly appreciated. ????????????????????????????????????????????

156444 2003-06-30 10:37:00 By reformatting you will have lost the Motherboard drivers.

Reinstall the on-board audio chipset drivers (get them from the Motherboard makers website if you cannot find them)

156445 2003-06-30 10:41:00 Had a look and found the drivers, www.soltek.de, definately drivers. Your motherboard also has a via chipset so if you want the quick fix just go to:

156446 2003-06-30 10:42:00 I agree. This just has to be the problem.

Use the via 4 in 1 Motherboard driver first followed by the audio driver.

I have used Soltek Motherboards in the past and still use one.

156447 2003-06-30 10:43:00 The MB website should have the drivers available for download if like me you quickly lose disks.

156448 2003-06-30 21:35:00 Okay, I tried that again.
1) Install of VIA 4n1 driver went fine (From CD)
2) Already had newest audio driver from the site specified above, uninstalled current drivers, installed the new ones, windows restarted just as it was finishing, turned on with scan disk and proceeded to update system settings (you know the little box with the drums).
3) Still the same problem, nothing has changed
Ideas????

156449 2003-06-30 23:54:00 Just had this same problem yesterday with a mainboard with onboard via sound card.

Only way I could get the sound to go was to uninstall the sound drivers (again!!!) and restart.
When Win98 restarts it should say found new hardware bla bla bla and then ask for a driver for a PCI Multimedia Audio Device.
Point it to the folder of the new sound drivers you downloaded but make sure you point to the Win9x folder (I found it under A1u350c\68\Win9x).
Don't run the setup that comes with the sound drivers!

Hopefully you will have sound now!

156450 2003-07-01 04:19:00 Had a similar problem on a mates puter with win98 except with a modem, in the end had to reinstall win98 from scratch and then it worked. It said the device was installed and working properly only problem was it couldn't use it. rsnic (3780)
156451 2003-07-01 12:27:00 While swatting up for my first re-install I read a caution that it pays to install m/board drivers before doing ANYTHING else after reinstalling, then onboard sound drivers, then all the other stuff. I've stuck to that ever since and it works for me. Good luck....P paradox (1082)
