156636 2003-07-02 14:03:00 PoWa - Don't overclock if you don't know how to... You do it through going through your bios and changing the FSB frequencies...

As for a PIII overclock, you could prob get a decent overclock without compromising anything on stability. It's a bit of a myth suggesting that it's completely unstable or you shorten the life of your chip, etc... with adequate cooling, and even with a moderate overclock, you shouldn't damage your CPU.

I would be willing to bet your CPU would overclock easily to 600Mhz without breaking a sweat... at the end of the day though, in an age where we are now in the Ghz, a 100Mhz increase is stuff all in the greater scheme of things and you won't see much of an increase in performance from the CPU.

Still worth playing around with just to understand how to do it...

156637 2003-07-02 14:04:00 PoWa - I'm assuming you have an Intel chip?? If you have an AMD, then the old pencil trick DID work... they've tightened up on that now though... ;) Lohsing (219)
156638 2003-07-03 06:33:00 Loh, yes I do have an amd chip. 1.1ghz Athlon.

Define adequate cooling for a moderate overclock? If my new 350W PSU fan has a big fan pointed directly at the cpu fan, is that good enough?

I'm tempted to squeeze another 100mhz out of it :)

156639 2003-07-03 07:57:00 the usual rule with overclocking is that your system will be unstable before any hardware damage occours.

wind it up, and see what happens, it might be an idea to install MBM5 (google for it), to monitor your temps as well.

you might need to add more voltage though, depending on your cooling, up to 1.85v is safe, just watch the temps.

if you've done the pencil trick, it might be better just to stick with increacing the multiplier only, on older chipsets increasing the FSB can be tricky sometimes...

156640 2003-07-03 07:59:00 i forgot to add, normally your cooling can be called adequate if your cpu temps are staying below 50-55c :) sanchez (3445)
