| 156663 | 2003-07-01 08:12:00 | Win 98 OS My understanding was that to open email attachment files eg .GIF files the file would have to be associated with a program to open it. How do my GIF files open when there is no .GIF file in the association list in file types? Is there something else I should know about? I am trying to help someone who cannot open his .GIF file attachments. Advice appreciated! |

The forum has a FAQ section (link top right of this page) with one on file associations which should be of some help. As far as attachments are concerned they should ALWAYS be saved to the hard drive and then scanned with an up-to-date anti virus scanner prior to opening, so get your friend to do this with his .gif files. Once on the hard drive he can then right-click one of them while holding down Shift and choose "Open With". In the resulting menu he will then be able to choose a program to associate the files with as detailed in the FAQ. |

If you want that program to always open giff files make sure the tick box is selected to Always use this program to open files of this type. HTH Murray P |
