157013 2003-07-02 13:43:00 Hi, I just read this weeks column on "The Whole Drive Guide"

My question is, would it be better to setup a virtual memory drive as suggested in the column say (500 MB), or would it be better to leave it the way I have mine now, which is (200 MB on C), (300 MB on D), (50 on E).

C = OS drive.
D = Game drive.
E = Software + work drive.

I am using windows XP Pro sp1.
40 GB Seagate 5400 rpm HDD.

Thanks!

You should only move the page file away from the system files when you have a separate physical disk available. You can find out how many fragments the pagefile currently is in by viewing the report produced from a defrag.

I personally would suggest removing the pagefile from C: drive, defragging throughly, and recreating a new page file with the minimum and maximum values the same, so as to avoid windows expanding the pagefile and fragmenting it. Then remove the remaining page file fragments from the d: and e: drives.

157015 2003-07-02 23:59:00 try redoing your maths ;-)

200MB + 300MB + 50 dosn't equal 40GB!

and in case you where meaning virtual memory sizes windows only makes one swap file not 3.

and please do not set a MAX swap file size as it makes it real easy to run into "out of memory errors"

157016 2003-07-03 00:57:00 hmm... tweake, think u might have miss understood me.

I am using windows XP rit now, and it has the option to manully set a swapfile for each of ur partition.

so wat I mean is that ... I set 200 MB on C: (Min and Max = 200), and similarly 300 on D: and 50 on E:

157017 2003-07-03 08:24:00 now i get ya :)

certainly one big swapfile is better than lots of small ones.

157018 2003-07-03 08:48:00 Or whack a gig of ram in the oldcow and disable the swapfile completly....... metla (154)
157019 2003-07-03 09:08:00 lol Metla .

Mine is set up like this:

120gig drive:

5gig Windows (C:) | 2 gig Swap labeled as Z | 25Gig Programs (D:) | 80gig for Stuff and lots of video (E:)

My swap has the min amount set to 2gig, and max amount set to 2gig . There is always 5mb that windows will not let you fill up .

How much ram have you got?

My advice, make a new logical partition using Disk Management (built in for windows) . Right click My Computer, and select manage .

Make it about twice the size of your ram . Then set the swap file to that drive . If your only using it for games etc then twice ram is perfect . Usually 1 . 5x ram is standard, but better to be safe than sorry :) If your using for video editing then you would want it bigger probably . :)

I seem to recall there was an article all about this in the June NZ PC world Magazine . They touched on it again, this month - but last June one was more comprehensive .

157020 2003-07-03 09:57:00 aroc......how much swap file space do you actually use ??

>Make it about twice the size of your ram ....... Usually 1.5x ram is standard

please let this old wifes tale / urban legand / load of @#$ die its unnatual death. if you had 3 gig of ram would you need a 6gig swapfile ??

simply take the max amount of memory you use, + a bit for safty, - the amount of ram you have = swap file size. :)

We have boxes here at work with well over 2GB of RAM with 4GB page file; -we have to use the /4gb switch in the boot.ini on those machines as all the memory (page file included) is used.

157022 2003-07-08 03:21:00 Careful about setting no pagefile, as I have played some games that look for a pagefile and will error if one does not exist .

Also, if you have 2 drives, place the swap on the fastest disk in one fixed size . , i . e minimum and maximum the same size .

I generally use the following rule when setting up a swapfile

128 MB ram = 256 MB swap
256 MB ram = 512 MB swap
512 MB ram = 512 MB swap
1 GB ram = 512 MB swap
and so on .
