156840 2003-07-02 04:23:00 Win XP Home. A small bell-shaped icon appeared today on my taskbar. Putting the cursor on it shows the message "Especially for you...". I have run up-to-date versions of AdAware, SpyBot S&D and Norton full-scan but it still appears although no virus, worm, trojan etc were found. The indications are that it contains some sort of message!!! Any ideas as to what it is & how to remove it please?? Garibaldi (3838)
156841 2003-07-02 05:07:00 Rigt click the mouse on it and see if it comes up with a menu. Usually the bell is used as a reminder for such things as MS money or works reminder. Someone having a birthday soon? If it was on my PC , I would have done what you already have done, double check AV is up-to-date, then curiosity would have been too much and I would double click to see. Oh and make sure I'm disconnected from the net. Pheonix (280)
156842 2003-07-02 07:48:00 Thank you Phoenix. Yes, I have double checked that AV is up to date. Right clicking the ding-dong brings up a menu to either "open the message" or "leave it alone" - guess which one I opted for!! I am not using the reminder function for birthdays etc but next time the bell appears I will open the message - boy-oh-boy it better be good news. Thanks again. Garibaldi (3838)
156843 2003-07-02 08:25:00 if its in ur system tray then u should be able to see wot its program name is by using Windows Task Manager, if ur using XP. If u r on XP then hold down ALT-CTRL-DEL at the same time to open the taskmanger and see wot processes are running by clicking on the "Processe" tab. If u feel that u have found someting suspicious then type the name of the process in the search function in windows .eg. if u found a file named dodgy32.exe then u would search for "dodgy32.exe" on ur C:drive or other drives u might have.

cheers,

156844 2003-07-02 09:39:00 Thank you VK-dre. Had a look as you suggested but nothing suspicious at all. The bell icon has not appeared in past 1-1/2 hours so will wait for it then have another look at running processes. I don't know wot triggers it to appear, not like genie in bottle. Thanks agen, have a nice evening. Garibaldi (3838)
156845 2003-07-02 10:00:00 Apologies all round. The bloody bell was a notification from Incredimail offering me discounts on their products 'cos I've been using I'mail for a year!!! Well, I've just blasted brown stuff out of them and uninstalled I'mail. They could have just sent me an e-mail which wouldn't have caused me to do a double-flip. My sincere thanks to respondents and to all who bothered to read my thread and my apologies for wasting your time. Am I embarassed - or what!!! Garibaldi (3838)
156846 2003-07-02 10:13:00 On the contraire, you did the right thing by not automatically clicking on a suspicious new addition to the systray without checking it out first like you did.

Nothing to be embarassed about. :) - you were just showing good common sense.

no harm done, anyone would do wot u had done if a dodgy looking bell popped out of nowhere notifying them about something. I wonder why companies create reminders/adds like that? They are such a pain in the backside for the people who receive them.
