156832 2003-07-02 04:07:00 I'm trying to share a printer and some folders over a network from my desktop PC to my laptop. Both computers are running Windows XP Pro.

The problem is, when I type \\LOFT (name of the desktop) in explorer, I am asked for a username and password. I can type in a user for that computer, which it accepts, and allows me to view files/print. That's all good, but I'm a bit perplexed as to why it prompts me for the username/password at all.

Any ideas? Thanks.

156833 2003-07-02 04:12:00 They're protecting you. :D

The OS assumes that anyone accessing the computer, especially over a wire, is an evil destructive cracker. So it wants some proof of identity before it allows access to the resources.

I'm sure there are ways to get around this security, expecially for printing, but I'll leave that for the XPerts. B-)

156835 2003-07-02 04:54:00 The answer can be found by doing this:

1) Click Start > Programs > Administrative Tools and click on "Local Security Policy"
2) Expand "Local policies" and click on "User rights assignment"
3) On the right, at the top there should be a policy named "access this computer from the network", double click it.
4) A list of users and groups should now be presented to you, ** if the group "Everyone" is not listed then you will need to add it.
5) Click "add user or group" and in the test box provided type in "Everyone", excluding "s and including any caps. Click Ok, and Ok again.

This should now allow anybody network access to your computer without needing a password. You need to decide whether you want to trade off security for convenience.

** The "everyone" group is not really a group, it is a security object that includes all users and groups.

156836 2003-07-02 05:16:00 The reason its coming up is because you arent logged in as as user that has an IDENTICAL account details on the other PC.. Meaning Username and Password are EXACTLY the same, case sensitive.
Try creating another user on the PC LOFT, that is the same as the one you're using to access LOFT.
