156864 2003-07-02 05:56:00 Ive just got a new hard drive and I am toying with installing XP and Linux - I currently have ME. Whats the best way to do this?

Do all O/S's need to be on the same disk, and does this disk need to be on the primary channel or can I install the new HD on secondary and use Partition Magic to boot the new O/S?

Graham Petrie has a good FAQ on multi-booting but not sure on the hardware side what I should do.

Thanks.

156865 2003-07-02 06:06:00 Are you going to be keeping ME?
Either way, I would suggest you install WinXP to its own partition first, any HDD, doesnt matter, and get that setup and running.

Then, Install Linux on another partition, as its boot loader will over-write the Windows XP one (Unless you're booting between WinME and XP, then it'll give you the choice of OS still.)

The OS's can be on any mix of HDD's, master or slave!

Hope this helps

156866 2003-07-02 11:14:00 Cheers and thanks for the tip about installing Linux on another partition. I want to keep things as clean as possible so I was going to do separate partitions anyway but didnt know the boot loader overwrote XP's. parry (27)
156867 2003-07-02 12:36:00 Yer, install linux last. Because if you install xp after linux, then you won't be able to get back into linux without a boot disk (pain in the mikta).

Unless Chill knows how to get the linux bootloader back :)
