157130 2003-07-03 01:36:00 I'm running the Ihug Ultra service, with Paradise as my ISP. Can't say I've been too impressed so far, either with the service or with their helpdesk.
Connection speed is slightly faster than dial-up, I've timed loads of downloads now and they average about 13Kb/s compared to about 5 on dial-up. Helpdesk pointed me to a CNET site with a clocking utility, this suggests over 100Kb/s, but that's b4 transmitting. Do the download and get the 13. I have seen 60Kb/s once.
System seems very limited, can't send email to ISPs other than Paradise while on satelite, many web sites come up "not found" repeatedly while on sat. but will come in 1st time on modem only. Far from being faster this chopping and changing makes my web time longer.
Nowhere in the web site or brochures can I find reference to the email limitation but the help desk guy seemed to think it was obvious.
I'm using the XP driver the installation engineer downloaded, (major annoyance is the pop up everytime you enter a user account, you have to accept their conditions every time!) Help desk response over this was that it can't be switched off "Ah yes, the XP driver"
Yes this is a bit of a gripe, I've been trying to find a forum and I've been back to their help desk about 5 times now without improvement. Even the installation guy said he wasn't satisfied and would put in a follow up on the issue but that didn't seem to happen and I can't get hold of him personally, he doesn't even have his phone # on his bill, only a box #. He's unlisted at Telecom. Strange for a business?
What are your experiences and any advice on settings?
PS Jetstream not available and not planned here, though I'm less than 100M from the exchange.

you should be geting 100-500k. their is something wrong with your setup.

>can't send email to ISPs other than Paradise

most isps only let you access their email if you are connect to them eg you have to dail up xtra to be able to use xtra email (pop3).

>I'm using the XP driver

do you mean the driver, the sat card program or the vpn program??

a lot of crontactors do this (exspecailly sky contractors no need to ask why ;-) ) due to customers ringing them up and abuseing them.
you can always ask ihug for contact details.

Not true, most ISP's will allow access to any POP server for mail download.
Only some, like Xtra will not allow this.

You can only send mail from the outgoing mail server of the ISP you are connected to but it is easy enough to change the SMTP server setting in your mail program to that of your connection to send mail.

157133 2003-07-03 03:53:00 Yes I suspect the setup here.
The sending is the bit that seems strange to me, I can understand not being able to pick up POP3 mail if I'm coming from another ISP,
I would have thought that if I sent, which is always via the modem, then it would go normally Do I mean the driver etc? Good question, There are several parts to the system, and it's not clear which I'm working with. No cell phone reception here either so can't talk to the help desk while I'm on line, it's either / or

157134 2003-07-03 04:24:00 What ISP is your modem connecting to.
What email program are you using.
If it is OE got to -
Tools|Accounts|Properties
Click on Servers Tab
Set the SMTP server to the outgoing server address of the ISP your modem is connected to.

157135 2003-07-03 08:38:00 thx for the corrction Jim B :)

krafty you just need to remember that any time you are useing the vpn connection you are connecting via ihug not your normall provider.

things to check with the dish... BER should be zero, check what firmware is installed, remove any spyware, reset TCP/IP.

the sat program (i assume you have the beta XP one) can be disabled from startup as its not really needed. also if you have the vpn program you can uninstall it and manually set up the vpn.

Modem is connecting to Paradise
What email program are you using.
Outlook Express
I'm in work now so I'll have to check that when I get home
Thanks

157137 2003-07-03 18:16:00 Thanks tweak'e, I'll check the BER (whatever that is) when I get home from work. By firmware I take it you mean which PCI card is installed.

Spyware, I ran Spybot, picked up mostly microsoft stuff. Then AdAware which picked up alexa and a few other things. All dealt with.

Reset TCP/IP? not sure what you mean by that. All settings are as advised by the help desk, we went through them one at a time and I made printouts of each dialog box as a reference.
Yes I'm using the beta XP satelite program. It doesn't work too well, never reports any speeds or stats, if I click on the "modem" for the connection in the tray it reports the reverse of what I'd expect, big upload figures and low download.

Signal strength when installed was 81%, now 79% since the satelite frequency change. Doesn't seem to make much difference to speed but satelite goes off line in the slightest shower now where at first it took a good downpour to kill it.
Are you running the Win 2K setup?
That's what the helpdesk guy suggested was the next step.
Thanks Krafty

157138 2003-07-03 23:50:00 next to the sat strength is the BER reading. also in the sat program is the display which shows what driver ver and firmware ver. firmware should be 1.02.

>but satelite goes off line in the slightest shower now

sounds like dish is out of alianment or LNB is getting stuffed. warranty job.

>Are you running the Win 2K setup?

no ;-)
