Symantec advises companies to ensure their firewalls are prepared for possible onslaught of hackers' challenge

3 July 2003

Computer security company Symantec is warning about an international hackers' challenge that is set to impact on Monday New Zealand time.

A hackers' group has challenged other hackers to deface 6,000 websites within six hours on July 6, US time - the Independence Day holiday weekend in America.

Symantec New Zealand country manager Richard Batchelar says the challenge is unusual, and it is virtually impossible to find out who is responsible.

The challenge is being advertised by hackers' forums and chatrooms

Symantec is warning New Zealand companies to make sure their protection mechanisms, and the policies and rules of their firewalls, are up to date.

157241 2003-07-03 12:13:00 Why waste your time hacking 6000 insignificant websites. If it were a real challenge, they should go for MSoft or Symantec. Then you've got some skills :p PoWa (203)

157245 2003-07-04 01:21:00 PoWa, Microsoft fell victim to one of their own flaws in IIS and their site was defaced for about an hour till they fixed the problem. They had to act quickly on it too as they had to fix the problem on all of their servers so they didn't fall victim to it, I'm not sure which server it was that was hit, this was probably a year ago.

Considering that you say the sites they target are insignificant, what's the chances that one of those groups may deface a significant site? It's really an ego booster doing this, and even if they don't accomplish the 6000 in 6 hours they still gain a lot of respect and reputation for leaving their mark on significant sites.

Although people may see this as a bad thing, and it is slightly to me, but they are doing security audits for free imo, and if website administrators didn't have a clue that they had this fault and can figure out how to fix it themselves then these guys just did him a favour, who knows, they could have done worse than just defacing a site. It may cost them a bit for the downtime to fix the problem but better safe than sorry next time.

157246 2003-07-04 02:25:00 Well said.. and I can see where you come from on some things.. as long as its not a major deface totally destroying the site, but rather just adding an image to the top of the index page etc..

Personally, I would be slightly annoyed, but more glad that I have been alerted to the security issues within my server I choose to use :-)
