157224 2003-07-03 09:50:00 Hi there,

I'm currently on a CRT Digital Flat monitor and it has died on me. Due to friends etc. recommending I upgrade to the LCD, I thought it best to consult you!

Can someone please give me a quick explanation on how the LCD monitors work... I get the general idea but just need to be sure, and also the benefits of an LCD over a CRT.

I am currently frolicking around choosing the 'Hitachi 17" CML174 (SXW<---Maybe not, depends what the advantage is) LCD Flat Panel' and just need some final advice to get me to take out the wallet! Anything wrong with this monitor... or anything I should know about LCDs?

In general, I will be using it for gaming and internet use... is dead pixels/ghosting etc. a major problem?

Thanks, help will be much appreciated... sorry about the long post and the long read!

Not sure how it works, but LCD monitors are much easier on the eyes, and you can enable "Text Clarity" (or something similar) and makes the text easier to read. Another benefit over CRT monitors is the amount of space the LCD doesn't take up. The base of most LCD monitors is no more than 20-25cm by 15cm <----- this is a rough guess, mind you!

You might also want to look at ViewSonic LCD monitors, they are good.

I don't have problems with my gaming, and internet surfing. I think it depends on which LCD monitor you buy.

157226 2003-07-03 23:01:00 LCD monitors are fine for gaming, the earlier ones (and perhaps the cheaper ones now) may have been a bit slow in respose time .

Philips, Viewsonic are both good . You get what you pay for in general .
Try to get one with DVI input as well as Analogue, as many graphics cards have a DVI output . This drives the monitor digitally at pixel level resolution .

I use the "cleartype" facility in XP . which does sub-pixel rendering, and gives text a perfect type-set appearance with no pixellation .

With LCD monitors, you get full visibility (a 15" LCD is very close to the viewable area of a 17" CRT monitor)

The only disadvantage I see is that the LCD monitor is made to deliver high quality resolution only at the "native resolution" of the LCD panel . In the case of 15", thats 1024 x 768 . If you try running it at 800 x 600 or 640 x 480 the quality is poor .

If you can live with a fixed resolution, you will find that the quality and sharpness is far above the average CRT .

There is no flicker associated with an LCD panel, unlike a CRT . I find that this alone is worthwhile if one spends a lot of time in fromt of a computer .

Size and weight is a fraction of a CRT unit, and power use is very small .

I run several LCD's and could never go back to a CRT
