157667 2003-07-05 07:44:00 I currently have 128mb of pc100 sdram and am hoping to fit some more in my remaining 168 pin slot.
My question is, is there a limit to the amount I can fix I have a gigabyte 7Ixe motherboard, the only possibly relevant thing I can find in the manual is a

'Max Component Density: 128Mb'

I do not know what this means and if it will affect my ability to upgrade the ram. Planning to buy from the net, can anybody recomend any sites?

157668 2003-07-05 08:13:00 The online manual says (page 21) that you have 3 memory slots, each capable of taking combinations of 32/64/128/256 Meg sticks. If running win95/98/ME then you cannot use more than 512Meg total. Pheonix (280)

what type of ram dos it require? to fill it, it may require double sided and even registered ram.

Have a read of this article (www.sospubs.co.uk) which gives some suggestions for upgrading RAM. It also mentions the work-around for the apparent Windows RAM limitation.

157673 2003-07-06 04:12:00 My guess is that "maximum component density" (apart from being wrong terminology -- I'm sure they mean "unit size" rather than "component density") of 128 MB means that you can have one 128MB stick in each slot you have . I'm not sure if you have 2 64MB sticks, and one free slot, or just two slots, one with a 128 MB stick . That makes your limit either 256MB or 384 MB .

Such a limitation is common (to save a few milli-cents per board for tracks :D) and it means that they have installed only enough memory address lines for 128 MB in each slot . You could put bigger sticks in, but the system could only address 128 MB of each .

It's not a new thing . . . my Tandy laptop had 2MB on the motherboard, and 2 30 pin SIMM sockets . It could be expanded to 4 MB . I tried 4MB simms instead of 1MB ones, but the speciofication was right: "expandible to 4 MB" . They hadn't put in the 2 extra address lines . :_|
