2003-07-05 04:40:00 | I've got to burn some photos onto a CD and nothing's happening. I followed the instructions - 'send to CD drive' then 'write these files to CD' steps, but it's saying there is no CD in the drive. I've tried taking it out, reinserting it, trying another CD, but nothing. I've struck this problem before, but that time the files weren't showing up at all. I tried putting in a CD I know has files on it, but when I click on 'CD drive' on 'my computer', it is only showing up the files I want to write to a CD, not the ones on the inserted disk. I've done a disk cleanup, a defrag, installed any required updates, rebooted, turned it off and started again, etc. but still no joy. The files are TIF ones and the quantity I have is going to take forever if I have to email them to work, so I'd appreciate some advice. I've got an Athlon 1600 PC running Windows XP Home. Ta!

2003-07-05 05:04:00 | Hi, I have had similar probs burning with XP...very flaky! Have you tried 3rd party burning software like nero? You can download a demo version from this link. www.nero.com Cheers.

2003-07-05 06:45:00 | Thanks Grahamem, I'm downloading that now. I found the site didn't have much information on downloading - I guessed our server was the one with the Japanese flag (for Asia/Pacific), and I clicked on one of the file names. It started downloading so I went away and left it to it (about 24 minutes), but when I tried opening it, the message said something about Nero not being detected. I went back and tried clicking on the other file - that is downloading now (estimated time about 1hr 30) - is this all I need to do? When I've saved it all to C drive, will opening the file run the programme? Are there steps to follow similar to the XP wizard? I'm certainly willing to give it a go, but am unsure how to go about it! I don't burn many CD's, but this is the second time I've encountered problems and it's really annoying. I can't remember how I got it to work in the end last time - I think I just kept trying and on one attempt it recognised there was a CD in the drive. | write-click (2248) | |
2003-07-05 07:26:00 | Hi, the japanese flag is for the japanese language version. You need to click on the file next to the american flag. Once you have downloaded the file double clicking it will install the demo. Once its installed run the program and you will be presented with an explorer like interface where you can just drag and drop the files you want to burn. There are also wizards that make the process even easier. Cheers.

2003-07-06 01:13:00 | I finally got the correct version of Nero installed, opened it up and went to burn the CD. Unfortunately, the CD drive is still not recognising there is a CD inserted - Nero came up with a similar message to XP's - 'medium needed for this action - CDRW - medium empty' or something. I've tried several different CDs but nothing. I've also tried inserting a CD I know has something on it, but all it shows are the files I have sent there to be burned. Is this a hardware problem and has anyone encountered this before? Is it fixable without TOO much expense?

2003-07-06 01:56:00 | I suspect your CD drive is "locked" with files in the OS waiting to be burnt. Delete these and re-boot. On one PC here (XP) the files burnt using XP software remain in the buffer and prevent any further use until you reboot.

2003-07-06 04:47:00 | Tried that Godfather but it's still not working. I've tried half a dozen new CDs and none of them are being recognised. I opened Picture It! and tried making a card because that requires you to insert a disk - it took a while (did some searching) but did eventually open it. I then tried a CD a friend had sent from the US with motorcycling on it - again, no trouble. But when I tried to open ones with photos burnt onto them by Viko - nothing. I've thankfully got all but one image still on the memory card in my camera so will have to take my card reader to work and download them there. They have a USB port but my camera needs specific software to download the photos - I'm not sure if they want to load the software in order to do this. I tried emailing them, but they are raw TIF files and it's taking an hour to send one photo! (I have seven...) I dread to think how long it's going to take to open tomorrow. So is this likely to be a hardware (CD drive) problem - and if so, is it fixable?
