157353 2003-07-04 05:09:00 I recently downloaded from a free disc a programme called defrag for windows and after installing it and running it for the first time it tells me that after 5 days I have to pay for it. So called FREEWARE.
Now I have read somewher that windows XP defragger will work quicker if you go into safemode and then defrag. Is this correct or do I have to close down all applications before defragging ?
Also how important is this defragging business ? My computer is slowly getting filled up with firewalls, antivirus software, disc cleanups etc etc etc. No wonder we now need gigabytes of hard drive.
Cheers.......heaton

157354 2003-07-04 05:23:00 Defrag as often as you can - once a week is good. The first time will take some time, but thereafter it will take less. Using the default defragger from Windows XP will suffice as most harddisks are so fast anyhow. Rearranging based on access frequency will only help somewhat. KiwiTT (4082)
157355 2003-07-04 06:04:00 its called SHAREWARE but as most non-geeks wouldn't no what shareware is its advertised as freeware (cause most people want free stuff)

the stock XP defrag works ok.

its always good to have the tolls ready in case and prevention is always better than a cure.

Just in case some people get a bit confused by this little slip of the fingers, tolls should be tools. ;-)

157359 2003-07-04 08:23:00 Defragging can be set so that frequently used applications are moved to the "front" of the hard drive so that they are accessed more quickly than if bits of the program were scattered across the hard drive. Terry Porritt (14)

most defrags progs will most fequently accesed files to the start (fastest) part of the disk. this helps speed up commanly used programs.
