Windows XP is quite a bit better behaved than previous versions of Windows so it should be sufficient to just close down all programs prior to defragging. This includes disabling your screensaver, anti-virus program if it is likely to start a scheduled scan during the defrag and other such programs that may start up. The first 10% or so of a defrag does take a long time, especially if the drive has not been done for a while, so do not be in a hurry to interrupt if it appears to have "stalled". On a large badly fragged disk it could take hours.

157374 2003-07-06 23:23:00 get Diskeeper lite for quick defragging here (www.diskeeper.com) It's quite a big download, but is free and will always be very much quicker than the XP original
