157687 2003-07-05 08:25:00 Hi

These dialer programs that dial an overseas number I've been hearing about how do you know if you have got one? Is there a name you can search for? Does Nortons anti virus or Spybot find them?

Thanks

GeoffW

157688 2003-07-05 08:29:00 Spybot is really good at finding and removing these.
It is usually indicated by a persistant request for dial up. Although, keep in mind that other programs can do this, if they consider it is past their "check for update" time.

157689 2003-07-05 08:37:00 I dont think that AV programs or spybot would actually pick up the dialler as I think they are (sort of ) legitimate. Spybot may pick up the trojans and the like that may come associated with the dialler though. Diallers would normally end up in the networking folder so check there for anything that looks abnormal and obviously practice safe computing downloading anything that looks suspect. I got caught on a game site that promised access to game by downloading file which turned out to be dialler. I heard modem dial up and quickly disconnected not before a 1 minute charge had been created. Lesson learnt.

157690 2003-07-05 08:42:00 Nortons A/V won't locate it but Adaware or soybot should -- probably best to reboot in safe mode (hold down 'ctrl' key when computer restarts) and run either Adaware or Spybot from there to get rid of the bastard.
Either do that or if you're confident go thru 'My Computer' and check in either 'Windows' or 'My Programs' folders and look in the temp folders in particualr for the dialer program.

157691 2003-07-05 08:48:00 A good firewall should alert and inform you which program is wanting to dial out without your permission allowing you to investigate whether it is something legitimate. tommy (2826)
157692 2003-07-05 20:18:00 Use windows explorer to and search for "dialer". you may get one in the start menu and a set with all the same name but if you find directory with odd names be very suspicious. Also if you are happy run regedit and search for "dialer" there as they install run at startup instruction there. piva (3796)
157693 2003-07-06 01:33:00 Maybe I have learnt something, for you to have noticed the charge, I presume it must have been added to your phone account.

I thought dialers used the modem/ internet to make contact with home, but making a phone call, well that is sneaky - do they all do this?

157694 2003-07-06 01:47:00 Unfortunately I don't think a firewall will tell you if a dialler wants to dial , as it only monitors the programs accessing internet when on (after dialling).
Also I think the more modern diallers don't mention the word dialler in their names. So searching may not be 100%
If you look under Spybot-settings-filesets you will find it checks for 3391 diallers. So even though it is a network function, it still has traces in registry and/or programs.

157695 2003-09-15 08:49:00 Ad-Aware has quarantined something called "dialler program" for me. It was in Program Files. Seems a bit too obvious though !
