2003-07-06 10:57:00 | I have 4 PC's on a 10/100 network. PC1 is WinXP and is the gateway to the internet for the other 3. The other 3 PC's are Win95, Win98 and Win2k. If PC1 is running and not connected to the internet and one of the other PC's boots up, the DUN is activated on PC1. Since this happens whilst booting, it isn't a software app trying to connect to the net. Anybody know why this happens? The only work around I have so far is to uncheck the "Connect automatically" option in the DUN dialogue box. That stops PC1 from making a connection but it still pops up the DUN dialogue box. | sinndisco (4059) | |
2003-07-06 12:45:00 | Howdy Sinndisco, This could still be an application attempting to access the internet even from the boot. If you are running an older version of Zone Alarm it attempts access like this. I am not sure if this "problem" has been corrected in later versions or not. In the case of Zone Alarm it is attempting to obtain an IP address through dns. Any apps like this running on your network?

2003-07-07 04:32:00 | It could be any program. MS Keyboard and Mouse drivers phone home as well to check for updates. | Big John (551) | |
2003-07-07 04:36:00 | This HP one was (is, unless the new driver installed) in the habit of phoning home every 10 minutes or so ... costing people 10s of MBs of overseas data per day. | Graham L (2) | |
2003-07-07 06:30:00 | Thanks for all the reply's, however there is no zone alarm installed or any HP thingies. If I let the internet connection go ahead it doesn't seem to indicate that it is going anywhere. I should also have said that it is now an intermittant thing. I'm not too concerned, it just had me thinking - I'm CompTIA Net+ certified even my other network buddies can't figure it out either. Time to call the Ghostbusters I think. | sinndisco (4059) | |
2003-07-07 06:51:00 | Also, none of the PC when booting up when they are not connected to the LAN try to dial out using their own DUN's, it is only when the XP machine is running but not connected. Wierd aye? | sinndisco (4059) | |
2003-07-07 08:27:00 | Have you got auto-update turned on on the XP machine ? I think Windows media player and a few other similar programs do that trick ( and of course the odd virus). Crunn

2003-07-07 10:47:00 | i'm rusty with XP but are you sure you turned off the "dail whenever a pc requests net connection" with the ICS setup ?? | tweak'e (174) | |
2003-07-07 11:51:00 | Thanks for more input, firstly there isn't any apps or viruses on the XP machine causing this because the XP machine doesn't do it on its own. This only happens if I boot up one of the other machines whilst its connect to the LAN. | sinndisco (4059) | |
