157896 2003-07-06 20:15:00 The toolbar itself is almost like Lop.com but it is popping up all the time you say and giving itself a random name.

If you click Home in the new toolbar where does that take you, to one site all the time or random sites. ? If one site all the time that might be the clue you need.

Ok, so it is not in Add/Remove, nothing strange there...............
and when you say startup do you mean Start>Programs>Startup or do you mean via msconfig ?

Two things too look at if you have not already looked.

Go into C drive and have a look at every folder name, see anything that might ring alarm bells ? If so, keep the folder but change the name and see if that kills the problem. Either the toolbar won't load or the program won't load as it will be looking for the add on if you get the right folder.

Other thing is msconfig.

Don't bite if you have already looked here, not sure which Startup you have looked in.

Start > Run > type in msconfig > Enter > click the startup tab > scroll down the list of programs and see what is ticked to run at startup > since you are in here you might as well have a clean up same time > Apply/Ok > Reboot the computer.

Of course even removing the toolbar from the startup as above it might just recreate itself so it becomes a never ending circle but if you can find it in msconfig that could also lead you to the folder the program itself is hiding in.

I am guessing it must also be talking home, is there a firewall on the computer, if so, have a look in there, if not, install the freebie of ZoneAlarm, that will be good enough for this purpose and then see if you can detect it trying to access the net.

157897 2003-07-06 20:33:00 I recall something similar that popped in as adware on some other software. After a few failed attempts of removal, I switched over to Opera - and it's worked ever since!

If I hadn't made the switch, there would have been a one or two things I would have tried:

This toolbar looks awfully similar to HotBar, however, HotBar adds its own skins. If it is HotBar, a solution is here. (www.safersite.com)

Try some software called Pest Patrol, it seems to have worked for some people.

Sorry I couldn't be more help!

157898 2003-07-06 20:38:00 Is it not possible to find it via reg clean or jv16 power tools? Thomas (1820)
157899 2003-07-06 20:41:00 search the registry for toolbar or anything else you can identify it by? wotz (335)
157900 2003-07-06 21:15:00 Just a thought for what it's worth.

Wouldn't have anything to do with "hotbar" would it. I recently received an e-mail from a friend and at the bottom of it there was a message about updating to hotbar for Outlook. I don't use Outlook so didn't even bother and then found out it was a spyware programme that can take over.

157901 2003-07-06 23:29:00 As a last resort look for anything suspicious in Downloaded Program Files. Easiest way to find the folder on any particular comp is to look in, IE, Tools > Internet Options > General > Settings > View Objects. Look at the properties for each file and its dependencies, if it doesn't look right, kill it.

157903 2003-07-07 01:32:00 Easiest way is to save all data and do a format and reinstall then keep a image of the C: I use driveimage 2002 for my 98Se O/S so that should it reoccur then simply use the image to fix PC in about 10 mins or so kiwibeat (304)
157904 2003-07-07 02:21:00 Thanks people, pretty much covered everything suggested already but i appreciate the input.

Just got holds of a particuly knowledgeable associate of mine and heres what he had to say....

if u go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\Internet Explorer\Toolbars

Under webbrowser key there is a list of numbers like: {010E05-433-3939993883838830-3993}

then, u look in the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ClsID\ and match up the numbers, that f*****r will tell u where the dll file is under InprocServer

then delete the dll and any other files it has got listed, then delete that number from the toolbar

also, under progid for the class it will have something like Ie.Toolbar
delete that from under the root of HKEY_CLASSES

or wait till adaware or spybot updates there database

heh,Makes perfect sence now.....lmao.

157905 2003-07-07 03:23:00 Coming from the 'Oh My God that's complicated' category, I would like to know of an easier way to remove this b@$^@%d bar from IE. I'm looking at it right now, only to have my fiancee tell me it appeared when she downloaded a 'Lake Scenes' screensaver.

Something to do with Fastclick.com from what I can tell. Also, don't suppose anybody can help me change my search page, as installing the bar changes the page that gets displayed when you mistype a webpage in the address bar. This wouldn't be so bad if the page it brought up attempted to give relevant results, and didn't fire off a popup ad as it loads. The search page has been changed to C:\WINDOWS\jquckfrkkek.htm and I kinda preffered the Microsoft setup.
