158012 2003-07-07 00:16:00 Hi, if i change the switches on SW1 to, say the wrong combo will it damage my motherboard ? my mother board is a 400mhz AMD k6-2 and the switch is currently on some bs freq of C-180 or something. in the manual it has the switch settings for K6-2/400 which i want to change it to. i want to change it to this because the CPU and AGP is higher. i am a dummy and i dont know what will happen if anything goes wrong. is it safe to change it ??? 158013 2003-07-07 00:32:00 if you set it wrong, the cpu will either run faster or slower than it is supposed to, or the pc wont start at all. Setting the switches back to their original places will return everything to normal.

There's no way you can do any damage.

Not quite true.
Very unlikely it would damage the m/board but running the chip faster than it was designed to can certainly cause problems.
Some CPU's will happily run much faster than intended whereas others will fry in seconds.
Others will happily run faster, with better than standard cooling.
If you are having a play around with the jumpers, make sure you have the heatsink & fan on & keep an eye on POST, most systems will tell you what it is running at.
If it is running way above what you know the chip to be Shut it down quickly & have another go.

158015 2003-07-07 04:57:00 The clock speed is not the speed the CPU runs at .

180 MHz could well be the correct MB speed for a 400 MHz CPU if it's "P-rating" rather than "speed" . There is a selection for "multiplier" , which might be "2" .

If you're not sure, you're safest to leave a working computer working . There's not even any satisfying smoke which comes out these days . :D

I fried an AMD400 a couple of years ago, never saw any smoke but that smell......never forgotten it.

158017 2003-07-07 08:15:00 I definitely agree!!!

Computers run on smoke as when the smoke leaks out the computer stops going.

Don't take this seriously!!!
