157886 2003-07-06 10:35:00 Greetings people

Time to ask my very first question here at F1.

Just been giving a clients pc the once over,Its got a toolbar installed(check the link for pic)

www.cosmoprint.com.au

Also is plauged with pop-ups and clicking any link gets ya redirected to a number of dodgy sites, even when not on the internet(infact, when using a cd off pcworld,i clicked on a link and was directed to a dodgy looking search engine.

The tool bar is present in all open windows, not just in internet explorer,as you can see in the pic its given itself a random name.

Scanned the system with updated versions of spybot,ad-awere,norton anti-virus,avg,None of them were able to identify it.

There is also nothing dodgy running on start-up.

Any ideas?

157891 2003-07-06 11:18:00 im gonna ask some odd questions here cos i wanna learn so dont bite...

it does not show up in progams installed ? (like a google or yahoo bar?)

and have you checked his history settings / box? or does it not hold that info for long enough?

or have you asked them what sites they visit ? you probably have ?

and can you right click or left click on it and get a drop down menu to check properties? or info ?

or all of the above not suitable for the problem?

and i am not sure of the question, do you want to uninstall it or just find out where it came from?

sorry not much help,

157892 2003-07-06 11:32:00 Hiya Beetle,I promise not to bite.

In answer to your questions.

Doesn't show up in add-remove programs.

The computer in question is used by 2 children(10 and 14),and i presume it either loaded itself on without asking,or offered itself as a must have download and they clicked "yes"...Although going by the date the files were created i was able to pinpoint which one was on the computer at the time,They of course denie anything out of the ordinary....and i believe them,i think they followed a suspect link and this decided to lodge itself on their puter.

As for right clicking it,take a look at the pic i linked to in the first post, theres a dropdown list there with the program listed on it,Disabling it thru there doesn't stop the constant pop-ups(free dvd anyone?)or the hijacking of links.

And yes,i definitly want to uninstall it,both kids have had the use of the computer taken off them untill i can clear it up,apart from the net not even being usable,it keeps throwing up porn and other such nasty stuff not intended for the viewing of children.

Its got me stumped,i reloaded internet explorer(grasping at straws here, and ran sfc.

I told them id research the problem, and if worse came to worse im gonna format there drive.

gives me more insight on the problem and a answer (which i dont have sorry)
and yes its not a good look for a kids computer to have that stuff in your face so to speak

and yes it seems drastic to have to format it but that clears all infestations i understand.....LOL

i cant say ive seen that particular tool bar but my knowledge so far is limited.

157894 2003-07-06 15:17:00 Metla, I've seen the same kind of thing on a friend's computer.

After installing the latest Internet Explorer from the PCWorld CD, the problem went away.

It might work for you.
