157721 2003-07-05 11:25:00 Win ME,800MHz,Duron.The typical PC Co machine.Planning on getting a custom built pc sometime in the next....yrs.So, I'm thinking, to get me started on video editing,of buying a firewire card to download off my Sony vidcam.And get some experience,even though it would only be to cdr for now.The pc shops aren't much help.Any suggestions on a card to buy,which would also run in a new pc in a yr or 2! Is it worth buying one with a good software program? I can get one with Ulead 6,I think it is,for about $60.00.Don't have a video editing program at present.Except the Windows one of course.
So any suggestions,please.

157722 2003-07-05 22:10:00 Are you wanting the Firewire card now, or in a year or two? If the latter, then wait until you get the new PC, as a) it will probably be cheaper if bought with the whole system, and b) by that time there may be something newer, faster, and better to use and firewire may be a thing of the past.

Just a thought :)

Mike.

157723 2003-07-06 01:27:00 Hi Mike.Thought about getting the card now so I can learn how to use it!Have had a free video program on this pc off of one of the mag cd's,but couldn't use it as I have no video feed into this pc. Might be best just to get a cheapy? Neil McC (178)
157724 2003-07-07 07:38:00 This Firewire card is OK. I brought it from Dick Smith

www.dse.co.nz

This PCI card has 3 outside / 1 internal connection, for the inside of your case. It's actually cheaper, than when I got it ($49)

Seems to do the trick. I use Mainactor for the Program. www.mainactor.com. I use a Panasonic DV cam. Once connected, it will also appear as a cam icon. And you can also take snapshots with it, from within Windows Explorer in XP. Also, if you do decide to do some video editing, it's a good idea to get a BIG hard drive. I just got an extra hdd for this (80 gb) the other week, for video editing as your hdd can fill up pretty quickly, when you record a little bit of video. (At least 5 gb for a few minutes of video)

Here is the direct link to that product: PCI IEEE1394 Card (www.dse.co.nz)

Tip: When copying url links from DSE they often go awol - a sure fire, never fail way of capturing the url correctly is to click on the "e-mail page link" beside the product and then copy that url to PF1. :)

157726 2003-07-07 10:45:00 Thanks spacemannz and Jen.I went and bought a Swann card today,with Ulead 5 software.The business really needs this card!
Just spent the last 2 hours downloading updates! Card went in ok,apart from the odd shock!Realised it was from the modem card I was rubbing against,so unplugged the phone lead! :8}
Now to figure it all out.
