158284 2003-07-08 11:46:00 I followed the article on converting LPs to CDs and made a few good CDs with the recommended programs, RIP Vinyl and Wave Corrector. Then my machine got a virus and needed a complete, professional format of C. With everything reinstalled and 256K RAM, a 1Mb processor and gigabytes to spare--same as before-- now I get bad playback using Windows Media Player 7.1, and I suppose bad CDs, if I get that far. I have a fast hard drive, which I have used to make movies. It sounds like the data stream is being interrupted randomly. Any ideas on how to fix this problem? I have noticed that even the Windows 98SE opening sound and their sample file is bad too. Sandy (4185)
158285 2003-07-08 12:13:00 check what drivers are installed for your sound card and motherboard. tweak'e (174)
158286 2003-07-08 12:15:00 The problem might be lack of ram & hardly any processing power at all.
Sorry I couldn't resist, I know you meant 256Mb Ram & a 1GHz processor.
Sounds like something hasn't been installed properly after the format.

I would check the sound card drivers are the correct & latest version
Install directx 9a & do a sound check for any problems by using dxdiag.
Update the CD writing software to the latest version (usually free from the website)
Make sure you speaker plugs are in the correct sockets.
Check Multimedia settings in Control Panel.
Update Media player to Version 9
Check your needle on the LP Player
Check that the sound from your stereo is good when it's disconnected from the computer as the amp may be failing.
Try another set of speakers on your computer, they may have croaked.

158288 2003-07-08 12:36:00 Hi..I had a sick Media Player after re-installing Win 98 but one of the bright sparks on this forum fixed it by suggesting the following.

In Media Player got to Tools/Options/CD Audio/and uncheck Digital Playback.

If it's already unchecked then all bets are off. I don't really understand the digital and analog options but it fixed my troubles. Cheers..K.
