158176 2003-07-08 02:22:00 Hi there, I had to completely restore my computer, it came with Internet Explorer 5 . 00 When I went to install Internet Explorer 6 I keep getting this message . "A PREVIOUS INSTALLATION HAS PENDING WORK REQUIRING A REBOOT, YOU NEED TO RESTART YOUR COMPUTER TO COMPLETE THAT INSTALLATION BEFORE RUNNING EXPLORER SETUP, SETUP WILL NOW CLOSE . "

Rebooting did no good, can anyone help me please .

A PREVIOUS INSTALLATION HAS PENDING WORK REQUIRING A REBOOT, YOU NEED TO RESTART YOUR COMPUTER TO COMPLETE THAT INSTALLATION BEFORE RUNNING EXPLORER SETUP, SETUP WILL NOW CLOSE

Select the OS you are having the trouble with & go from there.

158179 2003-07-08 04:18:00 Exactly the same thing happened to me on the weekend.

The steps I took to fix it were

1. Clean out the internet cache (not sure if this helped or not). I used evidence eliminator.
2. Install the 5.5 and 5.5 service pack
3. Install IE 6

For some reason you can't get to IE 6 without loading the 5.5 service pack first. I had ME so it restored me to 5.5 not 5, but the same principle no doubt applies.

158180 2003-07-08 23:15:00 Thanks for answering, tried everything but no go, won't even install IE 5.5. There is something in the registy you can do, what are, "delete any PendingFileRenameOperations values in this key." What am I looking for? Thanks.

158183 2003-07-09 00:13:00 This was recommended by another discussion group for Win95, but should work for Win98 .
Click on Start and Run.

Type regedit and click OK.

Browse to the following location:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\
Control\Session Manager

Look for an entry called PendingFileRenameOperations

Delete this if found.
