2003-07-08 23:37:00 | PJ, I am still in the pre-whizz phase of computing but I have used RegCleaner after I have unistalled something and though I feel like many the Registry is like the Matrix it has worked fine. Anything you don't recognise or are sure about then leave alone is the simple principle. Good luck. Another tentative step towards mastering the charming beast. m:)c

2003-07-08 23:52:00 | Never bothered with regcleaning. I reinstall my PC about once every 6-9 months, or whenever I get major new components (i.e. graphics card, cpu, etc.) Another good idea is to have 2 bootable partitions each with the same OS on your PC. One you use for day to day use and one for experimenting/testing new programs. This is similar to a "Production" and "Test" environment in the good old mainframe days, but on the cheap.

Saying that, it has fixed up some problem PC's using Win9x, that Nortons Windoctor was unable to fix. Guess it is just another "string for your bow" if used correctly. |

2003-07-09 09:08:00 | I have used most of the proggies mentioned here, but for a simple safe Registry clean I would use Easycleaner . It was recommended to me by an F1'er years ago and has never turned up a incorrect entry yet . Its also good for getting rid of unnecessary files, it does backups and has a few other features, though I would leave the duplicate finder alone(unless you have a lot of time and some expertise) . If you have never used one of these programs before and are reasonably active ie downloading, uninstalling etc file and registry cleaners can make a huge difference to the speed your computer runs at . Regclean(Microsoft) seems to be more a "fixer-upper" than cleaner(thats just my impression anyway)

2003-07-09 12:58:00 | Hi Misty, The group at MS that made the program, say it was for Win 95 only. I have used it on Win98 OK but causes a disagreement with the system information with regards Direct X. So I have only used it "if all else fails" scenario. I haven't tried it with ME, but again, probably use if all else fails, I suppose. I have found regcleanER quite good with no problems on any of the Windows operating systems if you want something easy. The other, is what Rod ger has recommended, Easycleaner by Toniarts. But it does have conflicts (heard through grapevine) with XP.

2003-07-09 21:16:00 | i have used regclean on XP, and it was ok, except it must have got a bit confused, and mucked up one program. I forget what that program was now, but i just reinstalled it. I wouldnt reccomend it though. | mejobloggs (264) | |
2003-07-09 21:17:00 | I would be inclined to leave Regclean alone, it is very old now. The first version had bugs and removed Netscape Registry entries, It also doesnt tell you what it is doing, so one has no idea what has happened, I dont 'believe' in blind faith. | Terry Porritt (14) | |
2003-07-11 09:33:00 | I did omit to mention I am running W98 in my previous post . I did a little searching and apparently Regclean is designed to run on W95, W98 and up to NT4 . and will delete some incorrect entries in the Registry . So not a general cleanup tool, but can be handy . By the way when running it I always rerun it till it shows no errors fixed . I also keep at least 2or 3 lots of backups (they are tiny) .
