| 158289 | 2003-07-08 11:48:00 | Does anyone have any insight into installing Win2000 Pro after WinXP Pro is already installed? Win2000 will be installed on a seperate drive and both drives are NTFS. I can find info on how to do it if the drives are Fat32 but is the procedure any different if the drives are NTFS? Thanks, Jeff. |

Partitioning is same for both NTFS and FAT32 :-) You should be fine, although, keep your WInXP CD handy, as you'll likely have to do a repair on XP, so make sure you have a good 2 hours before you begin so that you can install Win2K, and then repair WinXP :-) its not a major problem, Ive done what you're about to do 4 times now, and each time I simply had to pop in the WinXP CD and it was fine after a repair. To run the repair, boot from the CD as you would to begin install, but press 'r' to repair the installation :-) Hope this helps Cheers Chill. |

| 158291 | 2003-07-10 06:47:00 | Hmm, nope, won't work on a NTFS drive, when I boot the machine, both partitions, which are NTFS aren't seen by the Win2000 install prog and it errors with " There is no valid drive for a swap file, install halted" | Dak2 (1963) | ||

I would not expect windows 2000 to ever say anything about a swap file, such things are not used by 2000. Are you booting from a standard windows 2000 CD? Once you get the install to go ensure that you back up NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM to a floppy before installing Windows 2000. These will need to be replaced after installing Windows 2000, so as to allow XP to boot. |
