159019 2003-07-11 22:14:00 Recently some program on my computer has begun ringing home, seemingly at random. After connection there is no obvious activity and nothing that indicates what connection has been made. Can anyone suggest where I can look to see where the call has originated. Is there any sort of activity log anywhere? NAV has picked up no virus infection, although this still doesn't mean it isn't possible.
I'm open to suggestions.

Cheers
Richard

159020 2003-07-11 22:28:00 firewall time.

I use Zonealarm (free) and often find programs wanting to go play on the internet. If it is not something that I have done then I refuse and note what the name of the program is.
Otherwise or as well as use spybot to check for any trojans.

159021 2003-07-11 23:20:00 Yes I agree and you can get Zonealarm for free from here (www.zonelabs.com). mark c (247)
159022 2003-07-11 23:34:00 While it is possible zone alarm may pick it up. Which is say more typical for existing ISP account programs using the account this being perhaps more of a hidden dial up account [?] may impair zone alarms usage in various cases. I would also recommend a virus scan on say housecall.antivirus.com or the purhcase/usage of noteworthy virus scanning software with relevant Virus definition updates.

Also when it starts dialing you may want to check what processes are open in say task manager [Usually pressing ctrl+alt+del briefly will show this window]. if you do it before and during the activity it may give some clue to what process is being initiated by filename which you can then research on the net.

159023 2003-07-12 00:24:00 if it ringing out ie actually dailing the modem then i suspect you have picked up a dailer.......most likly a 0900 porn dialer. have a look in add/remove, also in dailup networking and give adaware/spybot a run.

if its you normall connection dailing then try a firewall such as zonealarm, outpost, kerio etc.

159024 2003-07-12 11:57:00 Usually 2 types of dialler...
1/ Is a legit program trying to check if it has an update, and usually can be changed, in the program options, not to do this without asking. Such programs as Nortons antivirus can do this.
2/ Is not legit program and using the dialup network, is more likely to be a "dialler" than a trojan (which communicates while online). Spybot would be one of the best at digging out and eradicating these.(searches for 3391 variations.)
I would also advise downloading a program called SpywareBlaster here (www.javacoolsoftware.com) which will stop hijackings from the net.

159026 2003-07-13 01:26:00 there is actually a difference to a dialler and a program that access the net. dialler is usually indepenant, ie has its own dialup number, insets and configers it own dial up settings. it is somewhat different to say norton antvirus which simply access the net (which may cause a modem to dail out if its set to do so) but most trojens/spyware/legit apps are not daillers. ie daillers don't use your internet settings. tweak'e (174)
