| 158943 | 2003-07-11 12:54:00 | I have purchsed a PC through trademe. The person i purchased it of gave me a star up disk to go with it as the pc came without hard drive. The problem is the pc does not like the boot disk and keeps on asking me for the proper boot disk. Is there a universal boot disk i can use or what else can i try? thanks |

| 158945 | 2003-07-12 00:03:00 | Although there is disks on the market designated as universal, because of the complexities in possible hardware configuration this may now always be achievable. What i mean by this is standard boot disks will work with standard systems although there can be exceptions to this. The url www.bootdisk.com is a definite place to start. I would go a bit further by specifying this url: www.bootdisk.com and recommending you use standard OEM or similar standard disks as you will find better support and documentation with them. |

| 158946 | 2003-07-13 03:09:00 | Check the BIOS boot settings. If it's set to never boot from a floppy (not unusual :D) it will continue to ask you to insert a boot disk . Same for CDs. Any boot disk is a generic boot disk. :D It will boot any computer which can read its first sector, recognises it as a boot disk, and can read the executable code. The only thing which will stop this is a disk with code for the wrong processor family. Apple boot disks (Power PC or 68k) don't work well on Intel X86 PCs. :D I never had much luck booting RT11 RX50 disks on PCs, either. |
