159103 2003-07-12 12:04:00 Just after something that'll let them send messages from the family's Win32 machine to my Linux box in me bedroom (Im in a "Sleepout" so it can be annoying for the family to leave the house to contact me).

Any recommendations!?!

Cheers

Chill.

1 - Snail Mail! It's still around today and does not yet get read by the government in their attempts to keep New Zealand safe from Cyber Security Threats
2 - Phone! In most households are a device with numbers on it and a handset.. Pick it up, dial 1-3-7, put the phone down, and let it ring! Once it's stopped ringing, pick it up, and you can talk to whoever origionally picked up the phone. However, as phone's are managed by computers, these may be interceptible and are certainly prone to bugging...
3 - Email - this is "unsecure" at the moment due to the sensitive nature of emails and the fact that every government thinks your planning on sharing national secrets, blowing up their cities or destabilizing them...
4 - Net Send/WinPOPUP.. I'm sure Samba has something for intercepting and displaying Winpopup messages...

159105 2003-07-12 12:24:00 And sorry about any sacasm or anything in the above post..
I've been talking to someone about internet security, the telecommunications bill and so forth, and being shedding some "different" light onto the subject..
I guess my enthusiasm mustn't of wore off fully before I posted...

159106 2003-07-12 12:54:00 There is a programme called Linpopup which you can run on the linux system. Its basically a clone of winpopup.

Also, have a look at the "message command" setting in smb.conf. Its documented in the smb.conf manpage. I haven't tried it but it lets you have it run a command when a message is recieved.

159107 2003-07-12 23:42:00 Oh dear, CC missed a few . . .

How about:

1 . A dog - can carry message notes between house and sleepout . Could be prone to bugging by persons intervening between house and sleepout with big juicy dog bone or biscuits .

2 . A cat - may possibly be able to do same, though cannot be guaranteed reliable unless it is feeding time . Also prone to bugging as above .

3 . Walkie-talkie - toy shops have some el-cheapo models which, if looked after carefully, will do the job quite well . Make sure you use rechargable batteries though . ;-) Downside: very interceptable and unsecure .

4 . Wireless doorbell thingy - only works at one location unfortunately, ie you have the chime end and the house has the button to get your attention . You can then poke your head out of the window to receive message . Also unsecure, as above .

5 . Paper cups and string - one person puts cup to mouth and speaks, other person puts cup to ear . Not sure if that works in the rain though . . . . but probably most secure method so far .

6 . Flashlights/torches - used with Morse code . Unfortunately very unsecure - don't even think about transmitting National Security Secrets!

LMAO

Sorry Chill, it is all CC's fault, I couldn't help myself! :D
