159548 2003-07-14 02:03:00 I have a dual boot system Win 98 & XP. I just updated Mb, Cpu to intel P4 2.4 gh. I kept my old hard drive, but XP would not accept the new setup, so I reinstalled XP. I did not realise that I would lose data. I have lost all the folders and files that were on my desk top. Is there any way to recover some of these files or folders ?. Without spending heaps of money. Any decent free or cheap programs you can reccomend?.
Thanks Paul.

159549 2003-07-14 02:06:00 Did you format or repartition the HD KiwiTT (4082)
159550 2003-07-14 06:25:00 Don't use it, to avoid further damage. :D

You are probably SOL, but post what you did (partitioning, reformatting, what file system -- W32 or NTFS) and bumping this to the top might stir up some suggestions.

159551 2003-07-14 07:17:00 I did not reformat. I took my 60gb hard drive from my old computer and put it in the new ATX box along with a new asus mb and a P4 2.4 gh cpu,
and new 512 DDr ram.
The Win 98 partition loaded up fine.
The XP partition presumably would not except the changes.
I reinstalled XP on the second partition only. The new system works great . But all folders and files on the desktop have gone.
Is it still possible to recover some of these files, without large expense, particularly outlook express previously saved emails ?
Thanks Paul

159552 2003-07-15 02:19:00 You should find these under your old "documents and Settings" folder for the user you had before. KiwiTT (4082)
