159492 2003-07-14 02:32:00 This isn't for me. It's for someone I know, who does something pretty dodgy if you ask me (he says it's not spam, people say they want to be on these lists). He's a really nice guy but doesn't seem to understand that anything where you end up on a "list" doesn't mean you asked to be there.

He wants high volume and high speed for his email bulk sending software.

(please don't growl at me, I don't do it, don't condone it, and am not sure I want to help him do it faster.)

robo.

159493 2003-07-14 02:33:00 Oh, and he even mentioned wanting two ISP connections so any anti-spam cutting-off would be to the connection and ISP he doesn't care about. (worse, still) robo (205)
159494 2003-07-14 02:46:00 It's just a matter of having the two accounts and logging in to the other with the router. I know someone with two JetStart accounts. -=JM=- (16)
159495 2003-07-14 03:08:00 I have a jetstream and a jetstart account and have heard of limiting at the exchange but have assumed they don't do this no more as I've been switching from one account to the other, usually when I have huge downloads to do I use Jetstream and then switch to Starter for normal browsing/emailing.

This port level just sounds like routing on a network, since DSL is a network and I can't remember how it goes but It's Your Router -> local exchange -> RAN -> Your ISP -> Internet, that's the basic of the model, I don't remember what RAN stands for, and I may have my acronym mixed up but I'm sure it was called RAN, I think that's the device that translate the @yourISP.co.nz and sends you to your ISP where you go through authentification.

159496 2003-07-14 10:26:00 Kame's right. All control is done by the RANs, which act initially as authentication servers, then as routers between the Telecom DSL network and the ISPs. They apply a speed profile to each logical connection dependent on the nature of the account - for JS Starter the limit is 128k, for others it's higher. Change the account name and you change the profile. You still can't run two sessions at once over a jetStream line because it is limited (by the profile) to carrying a single virtual circuit at any one time - log off one account before accessing another. More expensive DSL-delivered services raise or remove this limit, but you pay accordingly. stevee (1780)

Definitly

159498 2003-07-15 04:34:00 Hi Robo, you can have as many accounts on a jetstream line as you like, but you can only use 1 at a time, and unfortunately the rate limiting is done at the RAN on a port basis. That means that if you applied for a Jetstart connection, you will always have jetstart,no matter what login you use(except jetstream games). The same goes for full speed jetstream, always full speed, even if you use a jetstart login.
