159482 2003-07-13 22:44:00 Idea:
High speed jetstream 500 account plus a jetstart for gaming, two different userids, maybe two different ISPs?

That would work, wouldn't it? With a dial-up style adsl modem.

159483 2003-07-13 23:10:00 Good question.

I assume you mean consecutive connection and not concurrent, as you can't have 2 ADSL modems using 1 circuit at the same time.

I think you would have problems re JS Starter and full speed JS on the same ADSL circuit anyway, as the speed is controlled at port level. If they both used the same port then I don't see how the speed would be able to change.

159484 2003-07-13 23:52:00 That definitely would work, you can have two different accounts. It would just mean logging in with one or the other when required.

What's a dial-up style ADSL modem?

I still have reservations on the JS Starter and full speed JS though, the speed limitation is at Telecom level as I understand it, not ISP level. How would it know when to change? The JS part is ISP agnostic, and this is requiring two separate types of JS on one line?

159486 2003-07-14 00:22:00 Aah! What if you get Jetstart first then upgrade the provisioning to Jetstream 500 with another ISP and keep using your old login?

{THIS IS NOT THE OFFICIAL OPINION OF IDG OR ANYONE PURPORTING TO BE A PART OF IDG. IT'S JUST AN IDEA, OK?}

not robo. definitely someone else.

159488 2003-07-14 00:48:00 Godfather,

All enabled DSL connections provide fullrate JS, the ISP limits your account via the login/password. I can switch from fullrate js to normal jetstart dependant on my login.

Telecom level is full capability, they leave it up to the ISP to control your speed.

If you have jetstart and have used jetstreamgames, this is an example of swithing from normal 128K to fullrate.

159489 2003-07-14 00:58:00 There was a recent (well informed) post IIRC that suggested it was done at the port level, but not by the ISP?

All JS Starter connections can go at full speed if logged into the JS Games domain (which assumedly uses a different port).

That suggests it may not be the ISP that controls it to me, but Telecom?

More info would be welcome on this....

159490 2003-07-14 01:08:00 I would check with Telecom because I'm pretty sure the data transfered is charged back the phone number you are connecting from. i.e. the phone line with ADSL on it.
So it wouldn't matter who's login ID you use. Not sure what would happen if you had 2 diferent accounts, one with Jetstream 500 and one with Jetstream Starter.
If you logged in with the J.S. you would only get 128k but the data may still count against the J500 plan???
Would be interesting to know though, because you could then have a J500 and J.S. plan and use the J.S. most of the time but if you needed something quickly that was quite a big download just change to the J500 login.
Or use J500 until 500MB used then switch to J.S. login

159491 2003-07-14 02:24:00 I'll explain it as I have understood it,

There's two places you are limited, the exchange and your "Radius Profile", which is the DSL Radius Servers your ISP have on you and your connection.

If you currently have JS, as I understand Robo has this, and you told Telecom about this, then they open your exchange to full JS and you won't be limited. Unless you inform the technician at the time of him enabling it, telling him you are using JS and not starter they will take that limit off.

Now the reason there's two places it's done at is because if JS fullrate was enabled on your line and your Radius Profile doesn't allow this, then your Profile takes over and limits you, although your profile is doing this anyway even if the exchange has the jumper on or off, it's just making sure that you don't get more than you deserve.

Since Robo has Jetstream, then going to JS Starter is no problem, your Radius Profile will control it. It's different if you are a JS Starter and wanting JS although I believe the limit on the exchange is not being used or can be limited just using the radius profile, this is still uncertain, I have just been talking to a friend from Xtra about it.

I know that your phone number has no part in data transfer whether it's being charged to you or not, your ISP does not have information to your phone number account unless of course they are Telecom/Xtra who are your phone providers. Your ISP uses the login for this, and it's their only way of monitoring your usage.
