160073 2003-07-15 14:42:00 I just got Windows 2000 (finally!) went to upgrade it from windows 98 se but noooo. My computers a biatch and wouldn't copy some files. Namely NTDLL.DLL which obviously sounds important plus a few others. Also one with extension .DL_ (???). I installed it from dos and after borrowing NTDLL.DLL off my friend dos-copied it to every winnt/windows/system/system32 directory and finally was able to get into w2k to continue installation but struck more problems. After a dodgy installation & reboots, logging into w2k as administrator looked like fun.

But it was not to be.

W2k seemed not to have copied over my registry entries and none of my programs worked. Tried to install nvidia driver to compromise the grainy 16colour display. Hello! iKernel.exe error!
Not happy!
Wassup with this. What can I do to try and make the CD work? My friend tried it on his computer (sorry microsoft - uninstalled it again for XP) and it went fine!!!

WHY!!!!!!!!!

Computer stats:
NVIDIA GF4 MX440 64MB
AMD anthlon XP1800
40GB HDD
256MB DDRRAM
MS-6593 mobo

Friends stats:
NVIDIA GF4 Ti4200 128MB
SAME [XP2000+]
80GB HDD
1024MB DDRRAM
Soltek mobo

YOUR HELP IS VERY MUCH APPRECIATED.

160074 2003-07-15 16:32:00 Have you set up your HDD with a partition structure? Might be best to reformat and install from fresh? Errors may continue until you do that. tanzpete (3093)
160075 2003-07-15 22:13:00 Hi,

Upgrading is a real pain and I only had problems when I chose this option from using Windows 98 many years ago. So the only fix was to choose the New Installation method instead.

Well, I'm assuming that your 2000 CD could be a copy or a back up. If it is, try another.

160076 2003-07-15 23:20:00 Windows 2000 used to have a lot of problems when it first came out, that is why no one really liked it until the service pack2 was released. Upgrading from 98 is more than likely to cause considerable errors especially with devices and programs that aren't compatible. Your best bet is to back up your favorites, address book, mail account settings and any other files you want and then format and repartition your HD with the 2000 cd. Then apply service pack4 immediately. Followed by your drivers and programs. A fresh install is always the best. Also if you want to slipstream the service pack into your copy of 2000 then go to this site and follow the instructions. www.thetechguide.com

Also don't forget to follow the instructions on how to make the cd Bootable once more.

Thanks The Student
I did a fresh install formatted to NTFS and everything went fine.
:DI Love W2k:D

One niggle though:|. My full colour World of Aqua Mac (96bit) icons and any other full colour icons look like the colour have been cut out and inverted. Happens with the system works icon too.

Cheers.:D
