159954 2003-07-15 09:10:00 I have recently upgraded from a slower Windows 95 machine to a new computer using Windows XP and a generic 56K modem.

The problem is that the time to connect to my ISP is now much longer than what it was previously. It seems to take "forever" just watching the dialup dialogue box.

Once connected my modem speed is about 46 to 48kbps.

Any tips on why this dialup connection time should be so slow?

159955 2003-07-16 00:19:00 It should not be taking longer than on your previous computer. How was your internet connection set up? By yourself, the dealer who you got the computer from or from a setup disc from internet providers?

You could try noting down the dialup settings, eg phone number, username, etc etc, then delete the dial-up connection and use the Wizard to make a new one.

I set it up myself using the setup Wizard and using the settings as originally supplied by my ISP.

159957 2003-07-16 01:30:00 Make sure that the 'Log onto Network' option isn't ticked in the dialup netwtorking setting for that connection. Having that ticked will cause you to suffer up to a 3 min delay on connecting sometimes even longer. Odin (227)
159958 2003-07-16 01:46:00 Win XP does not have this option Jim B (153)
159959 2003-07-16 01:52:00 Turn off all protocols on the connection except TCPIP. This may help KiwiTT (4082)
159960 2003-07-16 13:20:00 Do you mean we dont need QoS Packet Scheduler? whatever that is. *Sparky* (311)
159961 2003-07-16 13:28:00 QoS supposed to mean Quality of Service (or something like that) but it is rubbish all it does is disconnect you lag out your connection and generally screw things up. So NO you don't need it get rid of it. Odin (227)

159963 2003-07-29 04:16:00 Thank you folks for your suggested means to improve my dialup connection speed.

It still seems slow but has improved. I am of the opinion that my ISP is a little slow on the log on sequence.
