| 159833 | 2003-07-15 04:11:00 | Due to a power cut whilst attempting a system restore I have been left with a very temperamental and fragmented system. I rang the HP help line and after discussing the situation came to the conclusion that a full system recovery is required from the system back-up on the partitioned hard drive. Has anyone undergone a system recovery under windows XP and are there any problems with the operation (administrator passwords being required etc). How long will it take?? Any reassurance gratefully accepted - cheers. |

Took about 30 minutes and most of my settings remained as they were, which surprised me. I was asked for an administrator password but as I had initially installed Win XP myself and had not specified one all I needed to do was press Enter and carry on. I think you need to find out whether your system recovery will format your system prior to reinstalling Win XP because if it does then you will lose all data. In that case backing up your data will be essential if you wish to keep it. |

| 159836 | 2003-07-15 09:17:00 | Thanks for your responses - when I bought the computer aprox 12 mths ago it came with windows XP home pre-installed. According to the "manual" the system recovery program uses a special recovery partition on the hard disk that stores an image of the original software. That being the case I'm picking I won't be asked for any passwords and hopefully I will end up with a computer as it was back at day one. Have got the kids to back up their stuff so will give it a go when I have got some free time. Cheers | dadzka (3499) | ||
| 159837 | 2003-07-15 21:50:00 | Gidday, Dadzka, Yes I have the same system, and have used the recovery sytem a few times. It works flawlessly, it will give you two options" one restore the the system, with its current applications, or format and full restore, back to factory specifacations. I would suggest as you have problems, that a format and restore would be in order. The recovery system can be accessed though your all programs list, or by turning off the computer, starting again, and pressing F10 before windows starts to boot. Back up any relevent information, as it all will be lost. The whole process, from start to finish, would take about 15 to 20minutes approx. good luck, Robby |
