160389 2003-07-16 13:35:00 Hi,

I just picked up a faulty monitor on TradeMe and am hoping that
someone on PressF1 can reccommend someone in Auckland that
could check/repair same?

I don't want to go to the expense of shipping it to Invercargill only
to find it is u/s!

Cheers,Kiwitas,;-)

160392 2003-07-17 00:56:00 Jeez Kiwitas, that's taking a risk!

It would have to be one helluva good (and large screen) monitor, and nearly new to justify purchase sight unseen, plus shipping to a service company, repair then on to Invercargill . For even a modest repair you could pay up to $200 .

I don't want to put the dampers on your enthusiasm but next time buy local and don't buy faulty, if the CRT or HV transformer are shot, you have done your dollars and will still have to pay the service company for giving you the bad news . You may even have to pay for disposal if there isn't a jumbo bin handy .

On the positive side, the recommended service company is OK, and hopefully it is a minor fault .

Cheers

160394 2003-07-17 01:34:00 why not get from trademe where the seller is located locally?
new monitors CRT's are not pricey nowadays... even if u buy new and there is the 3yr warranty. if its broken how would other parts fair down the road...

$5 . 00 for a 17" Triniton Flat screen that my son will pick up!

Surely someone would check it over for$35 . 00?

Suppose it is living somewhat dangerously!LOL;-)

160396 2003-07-17 02:22:00 Sorry Kiwitas

Thirty-five dollars is unlikely to go much further than a few quick tests to see where the general area of the fault may lie. It might extend to cover the time taken to order parts if the fault is obvious but it wouldn't cover serious diagnostic fault finding.

I'm not mean, but for $35 I'd do no more than take the back off and do some simple checks to see if the mains input circuitry was intact and move on to see if HT/EHT was present. That's about it, given that if you said no I'd have to reassemble it and probably dispose of the remains because hardly anybody would bother to come and pick it up.

On the bright side, if it has had it, you could always advertise on one of those new-fangled internet auction sites and you never know, somebody might pay $10 for it.:D

Cheers
