160368 2003-07-16 11:08:00 Hi

I was ripping my cd collection onto hard drive (taking awhile) using my dvd drive and getting speeds of ~16x.

I (mistakenly) installed Win XP sp1 (including Media player9), and now I can only rip the cd's at ~4x speed!!!

What happened?? Can it be fixed?

Disorder

ps.
running XP Home
Intel P4 2.5G

no seri9ously the patch is flawed and has slowed heaps of PCs down by as much as 50%

160371 2003-07-17 02:09:00 Revision for XP SP1:

Fixes problems with computers running too fast for Windows XP which causes the dreaded bluescreen.

Now you know why :P

160372 2003-07-17 03:12:00 Yep, best bet is update the ASPI (SCSI based) drivers for your O.S, can really speed things up. Although IDE ain't SCSI, the actual internal processing (I suppose is the easiest way to explain it) is similar, hense why SCSI CD-ROM drives were around before IDE..
Anywho, try that & also try a different ripping program. I've had good results with Creative PlayCentre II (If you have a SB LIVE-Audigy card) or for H.Q MP3's try Telos System's MP3 converter, slower but real h.q sound.

160376 2003-07-18 01:06:00 Hey I think "Kame" is right. I am running Micro$oft Window$ XP Pro and installed it along with SP1... and suddenly Winamp can't play my collection of WMA files, and the performance degraded tremendously! Now I can’t get rid of that d.arned thing away! turangilee (4211)
