160752 2003-07-18 04:17:00 Hi.
I'm trying to network two PC's.
Firstly, I am using a crossover cable, and all the settings are correct.
Both computers are switched on, and everything is ok.
One thing tho - One of the PCs (lets call it PC A) network cable light isn't on.
Its onbaord network, and teh light should go on whenever it picks up a network cable, but it isn't working, the PC its connected to (PC B) light is working.
On PC A (by the way - its the host) when I try pinging B, i get a request time out, and same for when B pings A.
I've tried swapping ends of the cable - B's light continues to work, A's still doesn't - so its not the cable ends.

But heres were it gets really confusing.
I used to have a network set up between PC A and another computer (PC C) the network was fine yesterday, and teh light worked on PC A.
Note - this network was using a standard cable with a crossover adapter.

So I reconnected that cable - turned on PC C, and the network between A & C worked fine - the light was going on A also.

SOOO.... I tried using that cable (with the crossover adapter) between A & C, and guess what - the light doesn't work on PC A, but does on PC B.
Its as if A doesn't like B, and doesn't wnat to network up.

A few things to point out:
A and C both have onboard LAN (100mps)
B has a network card (100mps)
all the drivers are curreent
All PC's are on XP Pro.

Anyone know whats happeniing? Or what we can try to get it going?
I hope you haven't gotten lost reading it all, if you have, just ask, i'll try explain it again.

thanks

160753 2003-07-18 04:20:00 a few more things to point out:
-ON PC A, when i click on "workgroup computers" it doesn't display any (not even the pc i'm on)

- All the pc's have the same workgroup (HOME)

- On PC A, when I try to set up a network using the wizard, when it comes up to the "connections" part - my LAN has got a red cross over it, and i can't click next (says i need to plug in cable, or connect hardware - both what are already done)

160754 2003-07-18 04:44:00 Check the BIOS setup options for the on-board network interfaces. (speed, autonegotiate, ful duplex, half duplex, negotiate...). I wonder whether one interface is determined to be 10 Mbps and the other won't step down from 100. Your third machine might be more tolerant.

It will be something simple. :D It always is. :_|
