160772 2003-07-18 19:54:00 Godfather, how do the relative costs of using Global
Roaming measure up against using an Internet cafe for say 30 mins every week . I imafine Global Roaming gives you greater freedom and flexibility but at a price??
willbry (1555)
160773 2003-07-18 22:03:00 The charges for Global Roaming are typically about $7 - $8 per hour plus any local charges that might apply, you are charged by the minute.
There are some configuration changes to be made to your dialup connection or you may even have to download some software from your ISP

You will have greater flexibility as for example you could use it from your hotel room but if you only want to check email only once per week it might be easier to just use Web Mail from any computer you come accross.

The other option is to dial your ISP direct number and pay the international toll charges. You can't use 0867 or 0873 numbers from outside NZ you will need their NZ local number.

160774 2003-07-18 23:16:00 Typically I pay up to $12 per hour.
On top of that is access from hotels which can be very high.

The Ipass software is preconfigured as a dialler, you select the country, city and it provides the local phone numbers.

You usually cannot send mail via your normal dial-up email account, you need to send all mail via the webmail interface. Receiving is normal. This is to avoid the ISP being used as an open relay by spammers.

Re the international access to 08 numbers, often does not work as incoming international calls are blocked. Xtra certainly was blocked from Australia, but not from Fiji....strange. Even tried it via a diverted local landline but no-go.
Does appear to work using mobile 021 access though, I have often connected from Australia via my mobile phone.

Many hotels have free access for guests from a PC in the lobby. Otherwise I would use internet cafe's if travelling around, anything to avoid carting a laptop.

160775 2003-07-18 23:30:00 Obviously Xtra is overpriced and restrictive compared with other ISP's

Two ISP's that I know of have charges of $7 and $8 for Global Roaming and you send and receive emails as normal with your email program mail servers settings.

The only thing you have to change is to use the local Global Roaming phone number and chnage you username format.
Otherwise everything works as it does now.

160776 2003-07-19 00:32:00 Thanks Jim and everyone else for your interesting and very helpful answers. I'ts become clear:
1. Leave your laptop at home
2. Forget Global Roaming and use internet cafes.
Of course the other disadvantage apart from weight is the hassle now of going through airport security with a lap top apart from the rest of your handluggage.

That is interesting. Can you be a bit more specific please? What are the devices called?

The other disadvantage of carrying a laptop around is having another item to protect from theft.

These units are basically a portable HDD with a download interface. Quite expensive, when I last looked were about $1200 but may be less now.

U can take it on travel for a month or more given u have a wall power socket. Not even a 2-4GB can beat that. Shoot them all in TIF or RAW NEFs... at full reso's.
