2003-07-17 10:24:00 | Until recently, when I must have clicked something unknown, I have had the 'normal' window in Word 2002. Now I get the page in 'print layout' form. I have found that going to "View" then click on "normal" will restore the page - but can someone please tell me, a new boy, how to keep Word on the 'normal' display as each time I change programs it reverts back to the "print layout" option. Even files I have not used recently, all now open up in the "print layout' display. Secondly, this too has happened, when I go to change a letter to say change a spelling mistake, when I correct the word the next letter is removed so you have to retype the whole line or even paragraph. An example is if I had - "it is a lobely day today" and highlighted the misspelt "b" in lovely, the correction of 'v' would be made but the "e" would get deleted as I replaced the "b" with "v" - correct the "e" and the 'l' disappears, then the 'y' and so on. Do I have to reinstall Word or can someone please tell me where to find the settings to correct. Thanks

I would suggest that you find the file "normal.dot" on your system, open it in Word (it's a template file) make both the above changes and save the file. Normal.dot is the default format and settings file for Word documents. Reloading Word would not fix it. Another simpler method is to find the file and delete it. Word will re-create it next time it is run. Do not have Word open when you delete it. Find Normal.dot using the search function of Windows, its location depends on your Windows setup and version. Its a system file so make sure you have the options enabled to find it. If you get no luck finding it, then its the way you are looking for it, as it must exist. |

2003-07-17 10:41:00 | Hi, Firstly you may need to go to "View" on the toolbar and choose "Normal". Then close the program. Re-open up Word again, and this time go back to View on the toolbar and check to see if Normal is already selected. (If however by chance), when you close Word after making the changes and it asks for you to save it, then please do. Just give it a name and then from this point forward, you should be fine. Alternatively along the toolbar, check to see if that Zoom level is not above 100% Personally, I prefer the 'print layout' form, as it gives you a better idea of the finished product, so that when you print the page out, you do have an exact idea on what to expect when it comes out from the printer. Secondly, I think that you have the 'Overtype' feature enabled. Sometimes this does happen, and the way to correct it is to move your mouse pointer along the toolbar at the bottom until you see OVR (short for Overtype) I hope this does the trick. Or else, someone else may suggest a much more productive method.

2003-07-29 10:39:00 | To Godfather, hi and thanks for your help. Have been away so that is reason for late acknowledgement. I have done the search as you advised and initially got no joy. After some persistence I got a file named "OPW10USR" which is quote Microsoft Office Save My Settings/Profile Wizard INI File unquote. A number of comments came up when I opened this and so thought I would print it as likely needed a bit of study. To my amazement it printed 11 pages of it!!! (each page headed with the above main file name of OPW10USR. Gave lots of files like <appdata>\Microsoft\<subfolder-proof (or stationery or themes or templates etc....and on page 3 was first reference to your "normal.dot" . Quote from it is "(include individual files)..list individual files to be included in the OPS file....syntax is one path\filename per line....wildcards are not supported....example for including Normal.dot:....then <AppData>\Microsoft\<SubFolder>-=Templates>\Normal.dot #word...unquote Then it goes into wildcards and says ....quote Examples for excluding Normal.dot: Normal.dot....Normal.*......Norm??.dot...unquote (Where I have typed........between words it is just to separate the lines or headings found .in the search result) So Godfather, you obviously know the where's and what's but I am confused at what I should do next and there is a lot apparent files (and maybe "wildcards" (whatever they are????) If you are able from this to help me more it would be great. Thanks. JJ

2003-07-29 10:56:00 | It looks like you are trying to make an easy task hard I am afraid . . :) Forget about wildcards, its not the solution . Forget about the INI file as well, it wont help . Find Normal . dot using the search function of Windows, as I suggested originally . It will exist . Its location depends on your Windows setup and version . Its a system file so make sure you have the options enabled to find it . Under Start - Search - select "more advanced options", then tick the three top boxes (system files, hidden files and subfolders) I am assuming you are using Windows XP here . . . . you need to say what version of Windows when posting . . . . Then search for the file, delete it when you find it . If you cant find normal . dot, you are not looking correctly . It will be there .
