161338 2003-07-19 23:00:00 My dad just reformatted his computer (his solution to small problems ;)). Before the reformat his keyboard & mouse worked fine. Now when he turns his computer on he finds he has to press Reset and boot again to get the keyboard and mouse to work. XP will boot right through as normal, but he can't do anything (the lights on the keyboard won't even work). However hitting reset will restart the machine with the keyboard and mouse working fine, until he turns off again; then when he turns back on they don't work again.

Win XP Pro
Celery 700
320mb RAM
Standard PS2 mouse and keyboard.

Any suggestions?

Mike.

Any chance the reasons for reformat could have had a similar cause?

delete the devices from Device Manager and let XP redetect them, the original device installation may have been corrupted.

161341 2003-07-20 03:15:00 I'd check the BIOS settings. Perhaps it's looking for USB keyboard and mouse. Though I suspect it should still work with PS/2 ones. :D Anyway, the battery is a logical suspect. That's a simple fault, so naturally the most extreme response (formatting) is indicated. :D

Look at the date and time after it has booted. (enen on the second try). If they are wrong ...
