| 161225 | 2003-07-19 11:30:00 | I have had several computers over the last couple of days all using Win 2000 that are giving me grief. First one is a Compaq Presario 1200 notebook that had XP on it. I tried to load Win 2000 over the top. Everything was fine until halfway through the install a message came up telling me it couldn't read a particular file from the CD. I skipped this one and it couldn't read the next one either. So I skipped this one and several subsequent files until it started reading them again. I suspected the CD so I tried a different copy of Win 2000 - but still the same problem. After skipping several dozen files on the install I found that once Win 2000 was up and running a lot of things were missing. There was no sound and more than half of the control panel icons were missing. When I tried to re-install Win 2000, halfway through the install it came up with a message to say that it now couldn't delete certain files. From memory these were the same files it couldn't read from from the CD when it was loading. Without NTFS boot discs I can't clean up the hard drice and do an integrity check (scandisk etc) to try to find out what is going on. Second computer with Win 2000 problems is my own one! Have been running Win 98SE for quite some time, but it was time for an upgrade so I installed Win 2000 and everything seemed Ok until yesterday when I went to move some files around. I can right click on things and I get the appropriate menu that allows me to cut, copy, delete etc, but when I go to paste somewhere else - there is no paste option. Also when I go to drag and drop files - nothing happens. The cursor doesn't change when I shift window areas. Third machine with Win 2000 has booted up in Safe Mode - I am guessing it is safe mode - and now it won't boot up again in normal mode. With all these problems - give me DOS any day! |

Also Sometimes compaq are built in such away that they will only install of an official Compaq recovery CD something in the bios chip that only allows compaq installations. (not all but some and may just be older machines) 2. Upgrading form the 9x series is never a good idea as 9 times out of ten problems begin to manifest themselves It is usually recommended to do a Full Clean Install. Also Native Win2000 does cause problems make sure you have at least service pack 2 installed. 3. As with number 2. |
