| 161038 | 2003-07-19 04:18:00 | I want to set up a wireless network in my home so that I can acess files, printer, and internet conection, anywhere in my home on my laptop. I want to do it with minimal costs. I am looking at getting a USB 11mb 802.11b wireless lan adapter for the PC and a pcmcia lan card for the laptop and setting up a AD-HOC network, but i have a few questions. 1)Firstly will I be able to do all I want with a AD-HOC network (files, printer, internet conection) 2)I understand the range of AD-HOC networks is less than if you use an access point, however they are slightly out of my price range. Will the range be large enough to cover a medium house, tipically going through 2-3 walls. 3)I'd like to hear peoples experiences with this set-up and/or peoples generall thoughts on this. 4) in any wireless network would I be able to use the laptop to tell my pc to play a mp3 file stored on the pc through the pc's sound card. (I want to run cables to my stereo from my pc, and want to know if I can use the laptop to select songs. thanks in advance |

| 161039 | 2003-07-20 05:49:00 | 1) Yes you can do all that with an AD-Hoc network. 2) Going by my experiences from the last couple of weeks, you'ed be lucky to get a decent connection going through 1-2 walls without an Access Point. 3) As I said in #2, have installed a few wireless networks in the last couple of weeks. All had a Wireless Access Point with them because needed to connect to existing cabled network. But even with a WAP the signal drops quite a bit after going through a couple of walls. But it would depend on what the walls are made of etc. Having said that I think wireless networks are going to become more popular over the next few months especially when 802.11g standard is finalised and the speed jumps to 54Mbs. 4) Once you have your laptop and PC networked you could use something like VNC to control your PC from the laptop. Basically it's like a terminal so once running it would be like you're sitting in front of the PC. |
