160983 2003-07-19 01:40:00 My friend is looking for a 80 GB 7200 rpm hdd. He is considering whether to get a Seagate or a Maxtor.

Recommendations, please.

Cheers

160984 2003-07-19 01:50:00 Hi
I'm looking at the same thing and from what i have read on here the seagates seem to be more reliable.
It will be interesting to see what everyone else thinks

160985 2003-07-19 01:58:00 I think both brands have put any flaws behind them... I have bought a ton of Maxtors and Seagates for work PC's and home... all in all about a 50% split.

I think if you are interested in benchmarking your hard drive, and want the best, the Maxtor (correct me if I'm wrong) is slightly faster with ATA133?? Comes down to cost really... if both the same, I'd go the Maxtor for speed.

160986 2003-07-19 02:09:00 From my problems with a Seagate drive, I'd choose Maxtor. Or Western Digital. agent (30)

Hey agent, whatever happened to the 40gig? Did you recover data at all??

160989 2003-07-19 04:26:00 well having had another customer's maxtor drive die two days ago, taking with it all his thesis work, family documents and pictures, music, everything... (which will cost him anywhere between 500-700 bucks for professional recovery), I have come to the decision to go solely with Seagates, of which I've only ever had one return, and that was due to user mistreatment.

Maxtors may be that slight bit faster in benchmarks, but the chances of you ever noticing in real life use is close to nilch. Buy for silence and reliability, and in my experience that is only offered by Seagate.

Of course everyone's going to have their own experiences and opinions, just like people who've never owned a lada will swear they're the most unreliable crapheaps ever, but some people who own a lada do swear by them (believe it or not! :D)

At the end of the day its up to you to make the decision, but either way I'd recommend you look carefully at the warranty options.. going up to a 3 year warranty should cost you an extra 7% or so, but it'll definately be worth it.

160990 2003-07-19 06:12:00 I've had 4 HDD's in the last 2 yearsf - 2 maxtor's, and 2 seagates,
I'm still using the seagates now, and the maxtors are in a rubbish heap.
One of them just completly died, the other, kept having errors, wouldwork fine oneday, next - wouldn't even be detected.

So I'd go with seagate.
Also - seagate's tend to be quieter than maxtors - but thats just a personal opinion.

160991 2003-07-19 07:45:00 I went through all this less than 3 weeks ago. My opinion, go with a western digital if you want exactly 80Gb. You will pay like $230+ for it though.

The 80Gb seagates are around $160 + postage. They only have 2mb of cache as well. I managed to find a 120Gb seagate for $233 that has 8mb of cache and thats postage included. (7200.7 ST3120026A). best value for money in my opinion, and excellent performance in a number of reviews.

Thats effectively $2 a GB. Cheap as.

You want to read the articles in PCW mag in the last months. Seagates are generally the quietest drives as well.

160992 2003-07-19 08:52:00 Hi PoWa
Where do you get the Seagate 120 gig drives from?
Sounds like a really good deal
