| 160954 | 2003-07-19 01:03:00 | Newbie questions. I have just read thread 37056 about OEM discs and the PC Co. My copes of Win.XP, video card driver, Norton AV and Office are OEM, does this mean that if I upgrade my hard disc these four progs will not work? What if I have the original supplier do the upgrade, do I have to buy new OEM copies? Also, what does OEM mean (Other Equipment Manufacturers?) |

| 160955 | 2003-07-19 01:08:00 | oem =original equipment manufacturer And no,OEM software isn't tied into any hardware,it just lacks packaging and is intended to be sold with a new computer. OEM version of windowsxp is 200 bucks when supplied with a machine, stand alone retail copy of xp is probally twice the price. Both are exactly the same software. |

| 160957 | 2003-07-19 02:52:00 | as you saw in those threads theres a few post about people getting OEM disks and restore disk mixed up. they are to different things. however be aware SOME OEM disks will check for certain hardware before they will install. eg the motherboard may come with extra games/apps and may only install on a pc that has the motherboard in it. usually they say on them that they will only work with XYZ product. |

| 160958 | 2003-07-19 07:41:00 | Hi Martina, As Tweakie mentioned, some OEM disks are tied to certain hardware. I have two Packard Bell computers and one is tied to the motherboard while the other is tied to the hard drive size. In the case of these two computers the OEM operating system disk is only bootable from the floppy disk. There appears to be some program that runs part way through the install to check if certain components are the same. This would mean that it could be altered by the manufacturers (as well as ourselves) by altering this portion. |
